HALF RICE, HALF CHIPS

Performance, discussion, music and Food

In collaboration with Black, Chinese and Scouse artist Paisleigh Bi, we worked with Pagoda Youth Orchestra to explore what is good and hard about being young people living in Liverpool right now.

From these explorations, we have created a short performance that we would love to share with you.

Paisleigh has also collaborated with the PCYO and its Music Director to create a new R&B-inspired arrangement of the traditional Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower (Mo Li Hua), blending traditional Chinese music with contemporary sounds.

The performance will be followed by an open discussion where we welcome your thoughts and feedback. Afterwards, join us for free food, music and a fun open mic session!

This performance explores racism, cultural identity, friendship and family. It contains some strong language.

It is for 13+ young people and adults. However parental discretion is advised for under 13s.

A fantastic day at Lancaster Music Festival yesterday! Tian Qiyi performed two sets, both drawing packed crowds!

This was their third year at the festival, and it’s wonderful to see their experimental music attracting more younger audience.

Pagoda Arts also ran 2 Chinese music workshop, where visitors hands on the erhu, yangqin, guzheng, p**a and dizi etc. Within minutes, some of them were playing simple tunes! Five or six people even asked where to buy the instruments, and several were keen to take lessons. If only they lived in Liverpool, they could come and learn with us!

Every year, whole city centre in Lancaster was alive with music of every style, bringing together thousands of people of all ages.

🎶 Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra – New Members Welcome!

We are recruiting young people aged 8–18 to join our friendly Chinese youth orchestra in Liverpool.

Beginners are very welcome, as well as young musicians with previous experience. Members can learn traditional Chinese instruments, perform at cultural events, work with other youth music and arts projects in the UK, and have the opportunity to work towards an Arts Award.

Instruments include Erhu, Guzheng, P**a, Dizi, Yangqin, Liuqin, Yueqin and Chinese Percussion.

20 Stories High has a brilliant new 12 week music programme for 15-25 year olds interested in experimental music called NU NOIZE- Next Sound Collective.

🎤 Are you a musician, singer, rapper or spoken word artist aged 15–25?

Want to experiment, collaborate and create something completely new?

Nu Noize: Next Sound Collective is a free three-month creative music project bringing together talented young artists from across Liverpool to collaborate with professional musicians and develop an original new sound.

You’ll explore what happens when different musical styles, cultures and influences come together — from hip hop and R&B to Chinese traditional music and beyond.

Collaborate with other young artists
Experiment with different sounds, styles and musical influences
Develop original music
Work alongside professional musicians and industry practitioners
Record your own music
Perform your work live
