Spirit-Level Transgender Support Group

Spirit-Level Transgender Support Group Please note: Contact the group directly for information, and not the venue.

Spirit Level is a long standing peer support for people who are Transgender or Non-Binary. We promote acceptance, understanding, and the interests of transgender people in Merseyside. We support transgender people, their families, friends and others, to better aid the understanding and acceptance of transgender people. In particular to help relieve the mental and emotional stress suffered by all t

ransgender people by providing help, education, empowerment and support and/or signposting to a more relevant support group. We aim to educate and inform a wider society and professional groups about all aspects of being transgender and understanding gender incongruence; gain public understanding and tolerance and, where necessary, challenge people and institutions denying rights or support to transgender people.

Spirit Level meets monthly in the LCVS Building in Liverpool to provide support and a safe space for trans people. Building management will be closing the building each night at 7.45pm. if we want to go on meeting, we would need to a) meet from say 6pm-7.45pm only, perhaps also changing the day we meet to a Thursday, say; b) Move to somewhere like DoeS Liverpool (there the trans social nights are) but this is difficult for some people to get to; or c) Perhaps move to a place like the Friends Meeting House off Hanover Street which would be expensive (say £50 a meetng) but means we could meet evenings or weekends. So what do people think? What should we do and how do we meet the challenge this poses?

Led by well-known writer, performer and artist, Claire Beerjeraz, this 2-hour creative writing workshop organised as part of the month of transgender identity focuses on exploring and articulating lived experience in relation to LGBT+ identity. Through structured writing prompts, participants will be invited to reflect on personal perspectives, everyday experiences, and inherited narratives, and consider how these sit alongside wider historical contexts. The session will also consider gender and sexuality as performative acts as well as authentic and grounded identities. Open to participants with all levels of writing experience. The workshop is free but please book your place on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/gendered-identities-a-free-workshop-for-the-lgbtq-community-tickets-1982065566465?aff=oddtdtcreator

Led by well-known writer, performer and artist, Claire Beerjeraz, this 2-hour workshop focuses on reflecting on the history of trans identity through guided discussion, selected readings, and reflection. The second hour shifts toward resistance and forward movement, using individual collage-making as a way to explore how remembrance can inform action, continuity, and responsibility. The workshop treats affirmation, self-determination and resistance as connected practices, and invites participants to engage thoughtfully, creatively and without pressure to share personal experiences.

The event takes place at 6pm on February 23rd at the Liverpool Central Library. It's free but please book your place on Eventbrite using the QR Code

I've been engaging with the city council about the cafe toilets in Newsham Park being 'policed' by the We Are The Shield group. They agree it's not good and are planning to convert both toilets into gender-neutral ones (let's hope they do!) but they are also keen to hear from anyone who has had a bad experience recently when using toilets or changing rooms in a park, museums and galleries or leisure centres that they own and manage. Email [email protected] or message me here and I'll pass it on
