PSS UK

PSS UK We're a national charity with a very simple aim: we want to help people change their lives for the better – no matter what life throws at them.

PSS in a nutshell:

- We offer over 20 different services to help people get the most from their lives – from health and wellbeing through to social care services. We work with loads of different people from all different walks of life. Everyone’s different, and our focus is on helping people choose their own type of support.

- Our world revolves around the people who use our services. They are

the reason we do what we do and they play a huge part in helping us make decisions about how our services are run and making sure we’re doing things right.

- We’re a business with a heart. All the money we make goes back into finding new ways to help people.

- We go way back: we were founded in 1919 by Eleanor Rathbone, a lady famous for tackling social injustices. In 2019, we’ll be celebrating our 100th birthday - and we still look this great! We want to make sure we’re around for future generations, and we'll do everything we can do make sure that happens.

- We’re always cooking up new ideas for services we can offer. We listen to what people tell us, and if we hear about a way we can help, we’ll create a service to do just that.

- The PSS team is made up of our wonderful employees, dedicated self-employed carers, generous supporters (volunteers) and the next generation of brilliant professionals: our placement students.

- PSS people are pretty special and everyone holds our five values at heart; we only recruit determined, open-minded, big-hearted, professional and genuine people.

- We’ve got offices in Merseyside, Wales, Yorkshire, Manchester and the Midlands.

Support that makes you smile

When you’re supported by Making Days, you’ll decide how you spend your day. You might want to get involved with our drama group, take part in cooking sessions, music groups or simply get your craft on in a crafting session.

This is just one of the many ways we make sure that the people we support have a voice and a choice when they come to our centres.

Ever wondered what a typical day in Shared Lives looks like?

The life of a PSS Shared Lives carer is probably not what you think. Take Abi here, who offers short breaks to people she supports on a regular basis. During her time with the people she supports, they can do anything from days out, walks to the park, shopping trips, family BBQ's and birthday celebrations.

Abi also does this around her job, whilst also being a Mum to her young family. Her role as a Shared Lives carer just fits so perfectly ❤️

Health and Social Care at PSS – working with the next generation of professionals

Last week, Sophie and Simone from our quality team spent the day with students studying Health and Social Care at the University of Liverpool. It was a brilliant opportunity to give real insight into some of the amazing work we do at PSS!

The first part of the session focused on what good practice looks and feels like. We also explored how being curious and asking open questions when supporting people can create space for individuals to feel heard and empowered to use their voice.

The second half of the day introduced the students to our Making Days service and gave them the chance to meet some of our awesome supported people. The students were super engaged and really enjoyed getting to know the people supported by PSS.

We finished the day with time for reflection and discussion around key takeaways. We were really impressed by the thoughtful conversations taking place, the inquisitive questions being asked and, most importantly, the values and learning the students will take forward into their future careers.

We loved spending time with the students and know the future of health and social care will be in safe hands with this brilliant group leading the way. Great work!

Who decides what I do when I'm at Making Days? YOU do!

You’ll decide how you spend your day, at what centre and what activities you get involved with. You might want to get involved with our drama group, take part in cooking sessions, music groups or simply take a moment to get outside and do a bit of painting.

This is just one of the many ways we make sure that the people we support have a voice and a choice when they come to our centres.

A royal time at the Royal Garden Party for Abi

Abi Reese, our ace volunteer coordinator and Shared Lives carer, was invited to attend the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace – what an achievement!

Here’s what Abi had to say:

‘Today I had the privilege of attending the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. I was kindly nominated by some wonderful people from work at PSS UK , and I’m incredibly grateful.

It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience such a beautiful setting, explore the stunning grounds, and meet so many fantastic people from across the country.

The day has fuelled an even deeper love and passion for the incredible work we do at PSS, and it has energised me to give even more support to our volunteers.

A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, who make my job so pleasurable and enjoyable, and who open up opportunities like this. Wow ❤️'

Well done, Abi!

Our PSS Parent-Baby Service is full of friendly, non-judgemental professionals who are passionate about supporting parents and families during their baby’s first 1001 days.

When you join our service, you’re not just accessing support – you’re becoming part of a community.

A community of new parents going through similar experiences.
A community of caring professionals who are here to support you and your little one.
A community of people who truly want to understand what it’s like to walk in your shoes.

We support families with babies under two, helping parents build strong, healthy and secure bonds with their little ones. We offer free in-person and online sessions, including perinatal mental health support, bonding and attachment groups, and trauma-informed care.

Whether you’re a new parent or a professional looking for support for a family you work with – our infant mental health support is here all year round, not just during awareness weeks.
