On Wednesday, our Outreach Manager Jo visited Ella at Peak Performance Gym on Everton Brow, where she volunteers three mornings a week.

Ella first started coming along to Mencap Liverpool and Sefton in February. Keen to gain work experience, she began volunteering in our coffee shop one morning a week and has now added to this as  she and her family have found a fantastic opportunity at Peak Performance Gym.

Since joining the team around three months ago, Ella has settled into a great routine. Her role involves helping to keep the café area clean, tidy and welcoming, as well as cleaning and maintaining the gym equipment. During the visit, Ella proudly showed Jo around the gym, including the café, boxing studio and some of the equipment she works with every day. One of her favourites is the ski machine.

As well as carrying out her volunteering role, Ella also joins in with the gym's classes. Her favourite is the popular DEKA class, which she admits can be hard work but is great fun. Ella is currently training for the Pretty Muddy 5K to raise money for Cancer Research UK, and after classes she often heads out for a run around Everton Brow with other members of the gym as part of her training.

Clark, Ella's manager, said:

"Ella is doing really well. She is a real asset to the team. Everyone has been really supportive of her and a couple of the people here regularly go for a run with her around Everton Park after class to help her train for Pretty Muddy. She has fitted right in and is a valued part of the team."

Ella said:

"I just love it. I love working here. I know everyone here and I love the DEKA classes - they are hard work but really good."

It was wonderful to see Ella so happy, confident and settled. Her story shows what is possible when people with a learning disability are given the chance to use their skills, pursue their interests and be recognised for what they can do.

Well done, Ella!

Lewis has been working really hard preparing for his next interview and did a great job typing up his questions with support from our volunteer Tony.

Lewis is now planning ahead to speak with Alice from RAWD and one of their actors, Linford, which is really exciting for the next time Lewis is interviewing for our Reach Out radio show. Lewis's interview with hos friend Adam is currently airing every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10sm and 9pm or on spreaker here https://www.spreaker.com/episode/reach-out-may-june-2026--72129563?fbclid=IwdGRzaAR-oSlleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAwzNTA2ODU1MzE3MjgAAR5ZnmsqPcIgAd4tXGMLahIt8wUrgoM7_sFbYxE-ggTEgAl-SOoydFO5dJ3fIA_aem_4eQEZpTq7f6th5KfrWbt1A&sfnsn=scwspwa

Alongside the radio work, we’re also starting a new Friday drop-in – a space where people can come along for a cuppa and a chat with the Reach Out Radio Team. It was great to see Matty and Paul join us this week, be part of the conversation, and bring ideas for future shows. We might even be talking about Paul and his Parkrun journey soon – he’s just completed his 40th one – go Paul!

We were joined by our friends from National Mencap, who we had been working with earlier in the day. After hearing aboutwhat we get up to, they chose to hold their debrief there, and we were able to give them a tour of the radio studio too. It turned into a really unexpected afternoon full of conversation, connection and catching up.

Lots happening, lots of voices, and plenty more to come

On Friday, members from Mencap Liverpool and Sefton took part in a national research project with Royal Mencap exploring the experiences of people with a learning disability accessing cancer screening services. Thank you to Amina, Mo and Andrew for facilitating the day.

The session gave members the opportunity to share our thoughts, experiences and ideas about cancer screening, healthcare appointments and the support that can make a difference.

Together we explored the whole journey – from receiving appointment letters and booking appointments, to travelling, attending screenings and receiving results.

There were thoughtful discussions about confidence, anxiety, accessibility and the reasonable adjustments that help people have positive healthcare experiences.

A huge thank you to Katie, Amanda, Racheal, Sue and Maureen for contributing their voices to this important piece of co-produced research. We hope their feedback will help shape future work to reduce health inequalities and improve access to cancer screening for people with a learning disability.

On Thursday we had a brilliant morning at The Croissant, where we welcomed Paula Barker MP to meet with members from Mencap Liverpool and Sefton.

Mencap Liverpool and Sefton spans the constituencies of seven different MPs, and our members live across all of these areas. We are aiming to meet with each of our MPs, either in their offices or, as in this case, in community spaces where we work alongside other organisations.

Members Sue, Rachel, Amber, James and Amanda spoke openly about what they enjoy most about being part of Mencap Liverpool and Sefton, including Mencap Community Cottage in Crosby, the work taking place with Liverpool John Moores University through the Yes We See You project, and our radio show, Reach Out, which we produce with LCR 106.7FM and which gives people opportunities to have their voices heard.

We also had important conversations about the barriers people with a learning disability face, including issues around being paid for delivering Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training while being in receipt of benefits.

Paula took the time to really listen and chat with everyone, and we are very grateful to her for giving up her time. She has also agreed to join us as a guest on our radio show in the future – how great is that!

Thank you to all of our members, to Paula and her team for such a positive and engaging morning, and to LCR 106.7FM for allowing us to use the space at The Croissant.

Our friends at Local Solutions and Liverpool Carers Centre have been in touch- they are launching a city-wide awareness campaign called:

“Am I a Carer? I just…”

The campaign is designed to help uncover “hidden carers” - people quietly supporting loved ones every day without recognising themselves as carers or accessing support.

Many carers describe what they do as:

“I just check in on my mum every day…”

“I just fit everything around work…”

“I just make sure they’re not alone…”

The campaign aims to encourage people to stop and think:

“Actually… that is me.”

Across Liverpool, campaign messages will appear in public spaces, workplaces, hospitals, universities and community settings. If the campaign resonates with you or somebody you know, support is available through Liverpool Carers Centre.
