Last Saturday, under a bright March sun, we had the pleasure of hosting the Stockport Walking Tour, organised by our special interest group, RIBA North West Heritage, Conservation and Sustainability Group.

The fully booked guided tour began with a delicious networking breakfast and an insightful presentation in the beautiful offices of Kelsall Architects. From there, we explored some of Stockport’s most significant heritage-led regeneration projects, before finishing the day with another fantastic networking session over lunch at Stockport’s Produce Market.

A huge thank you to Lisa McFarlane for making this event happen, and to Kelsall Architects (Paul Kelsall), Stockport Council (Peter Haymes), and BDP (Christine Davis) for sharing their expertise. It was an inspiring opportunity to learn directly from the architects, designers, and local authority teams shaping the transformation of the town centre.

Looking forward to more events like this! #

✍️ Principal Designer workshop for domestic projects!

Join the Northwest Small and Emerging Practice Group for a practical session on the Principal Designer Role.

The introduction of the PD (Building Regulations) role brings new responsibilities for architects on every project and for small practices, understanding how this fits alongside the existing CDM Principal Designer role can be challenging.

Join Keri Barr for a clear and practical overview of PD roles, how they align with the RIBA Plan of Work, and what proportionate compliance looks like on smaller projects.

As promised, we attended this afternoon’s lecture: Design Beyond the Drawing.
Stephen Setford and Tom Fotheringham of Stanton Williams
offered a thoughtful reflection on the collaborative journey of creating and using models in design. The lecture beautifully showcased the power of model making, not just as a representational tool, but as a driver of ideas, demonstrating how materials actively influence and shape the final architectural outcome.
It was refreshing to see such a strong balance in the room between future architects and more experienced practitioners. The quality of the questions asked spoke volumes about the architectural community’s shared passion for experimentation, curiosity, and pushing boundaries.
As expected, tonight proved to be another great success.
Well done, Manchester Society of Architects, AiM (Architects Index of Modelmaking) & ECC (European Cultural Centre , for yet another inspiring event! 👏

✨ What a fantastic week in Manchester! ✨
Last week, we had the absolute pleasure of attending the official launch of Making Matters—a month-long exhibition accompanied by an exciting programme of fringe events celebrating craft, making, and architectural thinking.
Huge congratulations to the brilliant organisers Manchester Society of Architects (MSA), AiM ( Index of Modelmaking) and the European Cultural Centre (ECC) for such a strong and inspiring start. 👏
We’re incredibly proud that this concept, first launched at the Venice Biennale last year, has chosen Manchester as its second stop. Even more exciting was seeing how beautifully the exhibition has adapted to its new context—shaped by the city, the venue, and the unmistakable energy of Manchester’s architecture community, which once again showed its strength, curiosity, and generosity.
And this is just the beginning… 👀

Watch this space as we’ll soon be sharing highlights from today’s event: Practice Lecture – Design Beyond the Drawing.
