Mark Meets: Arts 2 Heal 🎨

Our volunteer Mark O’Shaughnessy has been out meeting more inspiring community leaders, and his visit to Arts 2 Heal shows the powerful impact of grassroots innovation.

Arts 2 Heal supports adults and young people facing mental health challenges through creative, art-based programmes, especially those who struggle to access traditional services.

Despite their impact, founder Banu shared a key challenge: smaller charities often struggle to have their voices heard.

When formal, classroom-based IT solutions didn’t meet participants’ needs, Arts 2 Heal created their own approach, using creativity to make digital skills accessible. The result? A ripple effect of confidence and empowerment, enabling members to stay connected during COVID and even teach each other.

More evidence that community-led ideas can change lives.

📍 CAF UK Giving Report 2026

New research from the Charities Aid Foundation reveals that people across the UK want to be more involved in their local communities. Yet participation remains low, with just 37% engaging locally and only 52% feeling a sense of local pride.

The findings highlight that place really matters to people and when individuals connect with their communities, they’re more likely to give and volunteer. Strengthening local engagement could play a key role in reversing declining donations and building stronger communities.

Reflecting on our 2025/26 funding – and the partnerships that made it possible 💬

Over the past year, we’ve distributed £3.5M+ across 700+ grants, supporting projects that have reached more than 150,000 people across our communities.

By launching new partnerships like MHA Accountants' 1892 Foundation and SWEF Enterprise Fund, alongside seasonal support with the LaplandUK Foundation, we’ve continued to expand funding opportunities and strengthen the voluntary and community sector.

We’ve also seen the transformational impact of major funds such as the Pilkington Charities Fund, and the importance of rapid, coordinated responses in times of need through initiatives like the Liverpool Spirit Appeal.

Thank you to our donors, partners and community organisations who make this work possible đź’™

🤝 Know Your Neighbourhood: Strengthening Communities in Blackpool

Department for Culture, Media and Sport has published its final evaluation of the Know Your Neighbourhood (KYN) Fund, highlighting the power of place‑based, community‑led funding to reduce loneliness and widen participation in volunteering.

As part of the UK Community Foundations network, we distributed over ÂŁ1.5 million through 38 grants, supporting grassroots groups to deliver a wide range of activity in Blackpool.

The findings of the report reaffirm what we see on the ground every day: when trusted local organisations are empowered with the right resources, they create lasting change.

📊 Third Sector Trends: People, Work and Ambition
The second Third Sector Trends report shows our sector is still reliant on volunteers, but numbers have not fully recovered back to pre pandemic levels. At the same time, trustee and staffing pressures are growing.

One takeaway for us and our donors: backing people, leadership and organisational capacity, not just projects, matters more than ever.

📍 Our Place to Give: Why Place Based Philanthropy Matters

We welcome the government’s new roadmap, Our Place to Give, which sets out a clear vision for growing place based philanthropy across the UK.

For Merseyside, where communities face persistent inequality and in Lancashire home to some of the UK most deprived areas, this national commitment to funding rooted in place is hugely important.

At Community Foundation for Lancashire and Merseyside, we see every day how locally informed giving can unlock opportunity and support lasting change.

This roadmap reinforces the vital role local philanthropy can play in complementing public funding.
