🏘️ Congratulations to Weller Streets Housing Co-operative – a remarkable piece of co-operative heritage

In 1977, residents in Liverpool faced poor housing conditions and the threat of their community being dispersed. Rather than accept that future, they came together to create something different: a housing co-operative shaped by the people who would live there.

Around 70 residents took part in an intensive participatory design process. By 1982, 67 homes had been created around landscaped communal spaces designed to encourage safety, sociability and everyday community life.

What makes Weller Streets so special is that co-operation shaped not only how the homes were managed, but how the neighbourhood itself was designed. Tenant-members had a genuine voice in creating the environment they would collectively inhabit.

The principles became known as “The Weller Way”, influencing other housing co-operative initiatives across Merseyside.

Weller Streets reminds us that co-operative heritage isn't simply about buildings. It's about people, participation, democratic decision-making, mutual support and the power of communities to shape their own futures. ❤️

A powerful example of how secure housing and collective ownership can help preserve communities and build stronger neighbourhoods.

🎉 A proud moment for Sanford Housing Co-operative! 🏡🤝

We’re delighted to celebrate one of our members, Sanford Housing Co-operative, being recognised as a Cooperative Cultural Heritage Site.

Sanford’s story is a powerful example of what co-operative housing can achieve. Growing from the work of housing and student activists in the late 1960s, Sanford was registered in 1973, opened its purpose-designed housing in 1974, and transferred ownership to its members collectively in 1975.

What makes Sanford especially significant is that co-operation was built into the project from the beginning. The homes were designed alongside a model of collective ownership, self-management and shared responsibility — creating not just a place to live, but a community where members actively shape and care for their homes together.

And importantly, Sanford isn’t simply a piece of history. It remains a living, member-run co-operative, continuing to demonstrate how co-operative values can shape communities, housing and everyday life. 🌱

Congratulations to everyone at Sanford Housing Co-operative on this well-deserved recognition — and thank you for helping keep the history and future of cooperative housing alive. ❤️
