International Day of Co-operatives! 4 July. The theme this year is "Cooperatives for a Peaceful World", with a special focus on SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
At a time when trust is declining, inequalities are widening and more than 120 million people have been displaced worldwide, building peaceful societies requires more than preventing conflict. It requires strengthening participation, inclusion, trust and cooperation.

At a time when trust in institutions is declining, inequalities are widening and more than 120 million people have been displaced worldwide, building peaceful societies requires more than preventing conflict. It requires strengthening participation, inclusion, trust and cooperation.
This is where cooperatives matter.
The cooperative movement describes cooperatives as schools of democracy: places where people practice participation, deliberation, voting and collective responsibility in their everyday lives. Through democratic governance and collective ownership, cooperatives help build the habits and expectations that sustain more open, inclusive and resilient societies.
Housing cooperatives do this every day.
They provide more than homes. They create communities where residents have a voice in decisions that affect their homes and neighbourhoods. They strengthen social cohesion, encourage participation, foster inclusion and help address some of the root causes of instability, such as inequality and exclusion.
As part of , Cooperative Housing International is gathering examples from around the world of how housing cooperatives strengthen trust, participation and inclusion.
