E-bikes to be banned on the Merseyrail network

Merseyrail has announced a ban on non-folding e-bikes from January 2027. There was no consultation with MCC or other active travel groups or disability groups. Merseyrail has not provided any evidence for the ban and refused to publish its impact assessment. Not only does this move work against plans to promote active travel, it also discriminates against those who use e-bikes as a mobility aid.๏ฟฝ

Our friends at Better Streets for Wirral are defending a vital cycle route that is threatened with removal.

If you have ever cycled on the protected infrastructure at Fender Lane then please get in touch with them.

And if you happen to be free later today and would like to speak to the Echo about why the cycle lane is important to you, even better!

We need your support

We are meeting with the Liverpool echo today and we would really appreciate it if our supporters can be there too.

Let us know if you can be there and we will send you the details.

Do you find that getting around the Wirral is too difficult and unsafe? โ

We're looking for more people to campaign for a Wirral where walking, cycling, wheeling and public transport are the first choices for getting around.

Please get in touch with Better Streets for Wirral and get involved! ๐Ÿšธ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿฆฝ๐Ÿšฒ๐ŸšŒ๐ŸŒณ

Consultations are not referendums: a few people frustrated at losing parking cannot be taken as a mandate to dismantle core parts of a scheme that would have reduced injuries and death on our roads.

Liverpool Councillors voted unanimously for the Better Streets motion in April, and we expected them to deliver on this commitment to safer, healthier streets. A key point in the motion is to โ€œdeliver a connected, protected cycle networkโ€.

Which is why it's extra disappointing to find ourselves writing to register our deep concern about the recent decision to remove key sections of the proposed protected cycle route between Childwall and the city centre.

We have sent an open letter, along with Merseyside Cycling Campaign, Aigburth Community Cycle Club, The Bobby Colleran Trust and Love Wavertree, to Cllr Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport & Connectivity; Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader, Liverpool City Council; Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. We have invited them to come on a bike ride with us along the proposed route, to experience for themselves how dangerous it currently is.

We are concerned about the creation of isolated infrastructure, about process and representation, equity and safety implications, and strategic inconsistency.
