In the week since former Labour minister Alan Milburn’s independent review warned of a "lost generation" without urgent action to help more than 1m NEET 16-24-year-olds who are not earning or learning, BBC News looked at how Career Connect is working with Sefton Council to buck the national trend:

Sixteen-year-old Chloe is certain that if she hadn't received early support from age 14, she would likely be one of the million young people in the UK who are not in education, employment or training today, also known by the acronym NEET.

Chloe's careers adviser, Kate Timmins, met her at home, took her on open days at a local college and helped her secure a place on a vocational childcare course. She also gradually built up her confidence to be able to travel there independently.

In the week former Labour minister Alan Milburn’s independent review warned of a "lost generation" without urgent action to help more than 1 million NEET 16-24-year-olds who are not earning or learning, BBC News looks at how Career Connect Sefton is working with Sefton Council to buck the national trend.

Could personalised early intervention help prevent under-16s falling into the Neet trap?

"This week’s interim report openly acknowledges the ‘perfect storm’ our young people face – lack of opportunity, systems not fit for purpose, and a rise in long-term mental and physical health issues not addressed early enough.

"However, I believe the most important thing it has done is to dispel any myth that this generation doesn’t want to work – by evidencing the hundreds of thousands of young people who want to work but face frustration in accessing it.

"The stark acknowledgment that this is a moral crisis, and that the ‘great British promise’ that the next generation will be able to do better is being broken, should be seen as a rallying call for us all."

Career Connect CEO Sheila Clark responds to this week’s independent review by Rt Hon Alan Milburn of the increase in the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). Read the full response by clicking the link.

And it begins! 📢

Our 'World of Work' week has begun at Bellerive FCJ Catholic College with today starting off strong with an enterprise morning.

Students split up into groups to design a 'hotel of the future' with the help of a range of employers - creating a building plan, pricing strategy, and marketing materials such as posters, leaflets, and social media mock-ups. After a break, the students pitched their designs to their class and employer and were scored on creativity, teamwork, presentation, and concept.

It was an engaging session that had students and employers excited for the week ahead with careers fairs, mock interviews, quizzes, and options talks all still to come!
