Amparo: Support following suicide Amparo offers immediate, open-ended emotional and practical support for those bereaved by su***de.

Amparo means ‘shelter’ in the Spanish or Portuguese languages. We’re here to offer immediate practical and emotional support for anyone bereaved su***de. This can include: One to One individual support, help with any media enquiries, practical support liaising with the police or coroner, help overcoming the isolation, and contacting and signposting to local services. Amparo is not a counselling service, but we can help you find counselling support if you need it. Amparo is currently available in Cheshire & Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Coventry & Warwickshire, Lancashire, Kent & Medway, Thames Valley and Hampshire & IOW. Come and join us at ‘A Cup of Calm’: A Safe Space to Connect After Su***de Loss. For anyone bereaved by su***de.

A Cup of Calm is a monthly welcoming peer support group for anyone who has been bereaved by su***de. It offers a gentle, informal space to meet and connect with others who understand the unique complexities of su***de loss without fear of judgement or stigma.

These gatherings provide an opportunity to share refreshments and conversation in a safe, compassionate environment. There’s no pressure to talk - just a chance to connect, reflect, and be among people who truly get it.

Whether your loss is recent or from years past, A Cup of Calm is a place to find comfort, community, and understanding.
You are not alone on this journey.

Last week, on 30th September, two of our Amparo workers, Carrie and Karen, based in Kent, had the privilege of attending the Bringing Back Hope event in Chatham.

The event was organised to mark one year since the Baton of Hope visited Kent and brought together people from across Kent and Medway who have been affected by su***de, alongside health professionals working in su***de prevention and postvention.

Carrie and Karen were able to offer support throughout the event by providing a quiet space, open to anyone who needed it. They also had the opportunity to talk about Amparo’s work and the support we provide to people affected by su***de.

The evening also included a Baton Walk, which Carrie and Karen were proud to take part in alongside others attending the event.

Our Kent and Medway team will be joining a community event at Medway Park Sports Centre on Tuesday 13 October, bringing together local organisations and services supporting people aged 55 and over.

Carrie White, our Projects and Partnership Lead, and Karen Ruddel, Su***de Liaison Worker, will be there to talk about Amparo and the support we provide to people affected by su***de bereavement.

If you’re attending, please come over and say hello. Carrie and Karen will be available to answer questions, offer advice and explain more about how Amparo supports individuals, families and communities following a su***de.

The wider event will offer information and advice on health and wellbeing, staying active, volunteering and local activities, with a range of organisations and community groups taking part.

Su***de bereavement looks different for everyone.

There is no single way to respond to a death by su***de there is no set path for what comes afterwards.

For some people, the immediate questions are practical. What happens next? Who do I need to speak to? What can I expect from the Coroner’s process or an inquest?

For others, it might be help dealing with work, supporting other family members, finding local services, or simply having someone alongside them who understands su***de bereavement.

That’s where we can help.

Our Su***de Liaison Workers provide practical and emotional support following a su***de, geared around what each person needs. That might mean helping with immediate practicalities, explaining processes, finding additional support, or being there over the weeks and months that follow.

Because su***de bereavement looks different for everyone, support needs to look different too.

Connecting the pieces across North Central London

This week, Amparo North Central London was pleased to take part in the North Central London Su***de Prevention Conference at Islington Assembly Hall.

Bringing together professionals and volunteers from across Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington, the conference explored how services can work more effectively together to reduce su***de risk, improve pathways and reach communities that may be underserved.

Amparo's Bianca Kirkby joined the panel discussion and Q&A, sharing our experience of supporting people following a su***de and the important role that postvention can play within a wider su***de prevention approach.

The event was also a valuable opportunity to connect with commissioners, Pan-London partners, primary care and VCSE colleagues, share learning and strengthen relationships across North Central London.

Effective su***de prevention depends on organisations working together – connecting people with the right support, at the right time.
