We’re super happy to have the wonderful Illustrator & printmaker working with our Climate Champions this season. The group’s first task was to think about their dream gardens, using collage and clay to dream and play.

Our mascot Mr Potato even got a look in 🥔

Bringing together her skills as an artist, community worker, keen gardener and grower with more recent master’s in Conservation and Sustainability Education, we’re looking forward to lots of fun, learning and laughs together 🌸

All about the seeds this week at Therapeutic Gardening and later with our volunteers. Emptying the VERY many poppy heads, making a wildflower seed mix of our own harvested and dried collections, and making seed balls. We’ll be giving all these out at events and sharing at seed swaps 🌱

The seeds store up energy and life force, and we store up the seeds. It always feels good to be part of the cycle 💚

Love this photo by at Turner Home this week. Capturing the watering from a worm’s eye view 💦

We were planting and netting winter brassicas mainly, and some harvesting. Although we’re planning to mulch up the big bed we created with manure to build nourishment for next year, we did notice while planting that it was teeming with a very healthy worm population.

S, who is a fascinating man, highly intelligent and a mine of information about chemistry, biology, medicine, Latin, said ‘one worm in its lifetime does the work of a plough’. So true and a lovely way of putting it 🪱

We had a visit from Director of Public Health for Liverpool Professor Matt Ashton, and some of his team yesterday. We gave him a tour of the walled garden and The Changing Rooms and although it can be hard to sum up 10 plus years process, they really got what we’re doing.

As we found out when Matt’s dad Professor John Ashton got in touch during our heritage project, the family have a link to Sudley, but not a pleasant one. Matt’s great grandfather was Head Gardener for Emma Holt and was sacked and blacklisted for refusing to penalise the staff during the general strike.

You can read more about the shocking tale at the heritage pages of our website. It’s been a pleasure to connect with the family and show the rewriting of history and occupation of the garden for the people.

Great fun with yesterday, for their open day harvest celebration 🍂

There was campfire apple crumble, preserve making demonstrations with Rose & Alex, tours of the farm, a delicious field to plate veggie curry lunch from and music from the wonderful ✨

We did a couple of fermentation workshops, making sauerkraut with red and white cabbages picked that morning. It was lovely to get back into fermenting, something Lucy started in earnest a decade ago with

Something special happens when you ferment, especially in a group. Perhaps it’s something of the ancient history of this practice, transforming raw food into energy, enzymes, digestive support, preservation of food source, taste. It’s the same connective magic that happens when you cook together, but feels especially radical due to its almost eradication by global corporate food culture.

We looked at books and talked about - our go to fermentista. Bacteria, mycelium, roots connecting us all across the world.

Such a pleasure to hang out with old friends, meet new ones, and get to know this magical community farm on the edge of our city 💚

Autumn wreaths with stroke and brain injury group this week. We spotted some beautiful Rowan at Turner Home, some pink red and orange varieties, and decided to use it to brighten up October, along with beautiful foliage and flora from the garden ✨

We pre-made the bases from walled garden willow, and andreakuartist made some Rowan amulets to adorn them - it’s tricky even making a wreath with one hand, threading berries on a needle would be nigh on impossible!

Eye popping botanical beauties, especially in that stunning autumn sunshine ☀️

A peek inside the stunning gardens at Turner Home, Di**le. Lucy and Andrea are lucky enough to work in this stunning garden each week, running Therapeutic Horticulture sessions with residents.

This shot by before last week’s session captures the beauty of the space, and the autumn day.

It was a day of harvest and nourishment. Picking produce to be shared amongst staff and families, including some tangy Turner tomatoes, and feeding the crops with natural organic fertiliser made from neem.
