Kindling Farm

Kindling Farm In 2023 we realised our 15 years of work by purchasing a 78 acre farm to transform into an organic agroforestry farm.

With 800 community investors Kindling Farm wants to revolutionise the way we grow, distribute and sell local fresh produce.

We won our first ever farm auction item this week and it feels like another farming milestone reached :-)

We bid £380 for this 3m wide seed drill plus the 'buyers premium' of £45.

The plan is to do it up ready for us to sow green manures - I described it as a winter project and a farmer pointed out we don't have winter projects or summer projects, just 'we need that tomorrow' projects.

This afternoon we got out an old favourite: our brush weeder and weeded our courgettes, celery, celeriac and leeks. Its a dusty job sitting on the back, but with goggles on, Cian did a great job steering the machine to miss our crops.

Just two people on the module planter today, because we plant the squash seedlings 1 metre apart we only have two rows (rather than the usual 3) in each bed.

Our next round of planting has begun. We are having seedlings delivered every two weeks, Today, in a couple of hours we've planted 3,000 winter squash.

But bed prep has taken weeks of power harrowing and rolling and days and days of work by our staff and volunteers to remove clod of dead grass remaining after the initial ploughing and discing.

These squash will eventually be sold to & , all going well.

We've recieved our latest delivery of seedlings. We have just finished planting all our brassica's from our previous delivery from two weeks ago, Its just been too hot and the soil too dry to plant our remaining red, white and pointed cabbage and kales. But we had some luck and had a relatively cool day followed by a night of heavy showers.

So bed prep continues. Rain is promised next week - so that might free us up from irrigating, but will delay planting and we will very soon need to focus on mechanically weeding.

Most days we've had between 6 & 10 people on the farm. We have 2 full time growers, a couple of casual staff and each week we have at least one person doing a paid trial day with us. We have a couple of people in the office doing all the crucial work like HR, admin and comms. And each Monday and Wednesday we have three people helping with veg packing. And then we have Helen and Chris who are focused on the co-ordinating it all.

This is all complimented by our wonderful volunteers - either joining us during the week for a day or so or attending our volunteer weekends - today, Sunday and Monday over 30 people have signed up.

We are super excited to be supplying Grocery with the first of our season's strawberries. Harvested this morning, cooled and packed by lunchtime and on the shelves by late afternoon. You can't get more local and fresh than that.

Much of our time over the last few days has involved moving our irrigition boom and reel around the farm. It takes about 3 or 4 hours to water an alley of 200m. Today we have watered an alley of courgettes and here we are giving our celery, celeriac and leeks a much needed drink.

We are so grateful for this crucial equipment, and infact have another boom and reel arriving next week to help us cope with this weather.
