We are a youth organisation for young people aged 12-18yrs
We offer many activities such as Flying & Gliding, DofE, Shooting and many other opportunities.

Based in Garston, 90 (Speke) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets(RAFAC) are a uniformed youth organisation for young people both male & female aged 12-18yrs

We take part in many activities such as: Flying/Gliding, sports, Shooting, Fieldcraft, and many others. We are also the biggest provider of the Duke of Edinburgh award. To find out more contact us by:

90 (Speke) Squadron – Fieldcraft Skills Night

The nights might be drawing in, but that isn’t stopping our cadets from getting outside and pushing their fieldcraft skills to the next level. With headtorches on and spirits high, they got stuck into a trio of practical, hands‑on activities designed to build confidence and capability in the field.

🪖 Moving Across Open Ground
They practised how to move with purpose, stay low, use natural cover, and communicate effectively while crossing exposed terrain. A brilliant session that sharpened awareness and teamwork.

🌿 Principles of Camouflage
From natural materials to smart positioning, cadets explored how to blend into their surroundings and reduce their visibility. Lots of creativity, problem‑solving, and muddy hands.

🔥 Cooking in the Field
Cadets learned how to safely prepare and heat ration packs, manage fuel sources, and work as a team to get meals cooked efficiently — even in low light and colder conditions.

A huge well done to every cadet who stepped up tonight. Shorter days and colder evenings aren’t slowing this squadron down — if anything, they’re making us stronger.

Cadets from 90 (Speke) and 2184 (Upton) represented Merseyside Wing for First Aid at the North Region Field Training Day, coming in a very respectable 3rd place.

They had work through a series of realistic casualty scenarios designed to test their medical skills under pressure.

They were assessed on:
👀 Primary survey & scene safety
📋 Casualty assessment and injury identification
🤕 Bleeding control, burns management, and fracture support
♥️CPR awareness and emergency response decision‑making
📢Clear communication and teamwork during incidents

So much hard work went into practicing & training, with weekends & evenings sacrificed by both cadets & staff to get ready for this event.

A brilliant effort from every cadet involved.

90 (Speke) Squadron – Field Training Day 2026 Results

An outstanding performance from 90 (Speke) Squadron at this year’s Field Training Day (FTD). Our cadets showed discipline, teamwork, and real determination across every assessed area — and the results speak for themselves.

🏆 Annual Inspection – Winners (4 years on the bounce)
This inspection looks at the overall standard of the squadron: uniform, conduct, organisation, training quality, and how cadets present themselves.
Winning it four years running shows exceptional consistency and pride — a huge achievement for everyone involved.

🚩 Banner Drill – Second Place
Banner Drill tests precision, teamwork, and ceremonial discipline. It’s about moving as one unit, maintaining formation, and representing the squadron with professionalism.
A strong second place reflects the hours of practice and commitment from the team.

⛑️ First Aid – Joint Winners (with 2184 Upton)
Cadets are put through realistic casualty scenarios requiring calm thinking, correct treatment, and clear communication.
Sharing first place with 2184 Upton shows the high standard across both squadrons — and highlights how capable our cadets are when it matters.

🥇 Overall Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)
This award recognises the squadron’s collective success across all levels of the DofE programme — volunteering, physical activity, skills, and expeditions.
Coming out on top shows dedication, resilience, and a willingness to push personal boundaries.

📈 Most Improved DofE
This celebrates cadets who have shown exceptional growth in their DofE journey — stepping up, overcoming challenges, and demonstrating real progress.
It’s a powerful reflection of their determination and the support they’ve received along the way.

A massive well done to every cadet who took part. You represented your Squadron with pride, professionalism, and spirit throughout the day. These results show exactly what happens when teamwork, effort, and commitment come together.

🫡 90 Speke Induction Evening 🫡

Last night we welcomed 30 brand‑new recruits into our Squadron - and what a night it was 💙🔥

Our newest cadets got hands-on with some of the core experiences that make RAF Air Cadets so unique:

🛩 Flight Simulator – taking to the virtual skies
📻 Radios – including a competitive round of Connect 4
🩹 First Aid + CASSIM – learning lifesaving skills through realistic scenarios
🎵 Music – teamwork, rhythm and fun
🧭 Adventure Training – testing confidence and resilience

🥈 90 (Speke) Squadron – Silver DofE Practice Expedition Complete!

Over the weekend, our cadets smashed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition, wrapping up one of the final big milestones before the end of British Summer Time. With two expeditions squeezed in back‑to‑back, this group has shown serious commitment to getting Silver boxed off and they’ve absolutely earned the bragging rights.

🌄 Roaming Around Rivington 🌄
Our teams spent two days journeying around the Rivington area, taking on:

- 7 hours of daily journeying time (walking, breaks, teamwork and shared goals)
- 2 nights camping under crisp autumn skies
- A route that demanded navigation skill, resilience, and proper teamwork

🌦️ Weather Report: The Full British Experience 🌦️
The expedition served up a classic late‑September mix:

Largely dry across Friday and Saturday
Cold nights that made those tents feel extra cosy
A wet Sunday, just to keep everyone honest

And through it all, the cadets kept spirits high and pace steady.

🌕 Blessed by the Harvest Moon 🌕
We were lucky enough to be out during the Harvest Moon - the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. Traditionally, its bright, early rise helped farmers work longer into the evening during harvest season. For our cadets, it meant glowing skies, long moonlit horizons, and a properly atmospheric campsite to end each day.

⭐ Promotion Success at 90 (Speke) Squadron! ⭐

We’re proud to celebrate three well‑deserved promotions within 90 - each one earned through commitment, leadership, and consistent effort.

🔷 Sgt Parker → Flight Sergeant
Promotion to Flight Sergeant is a major milestone. Cadets at this level demonstrate:
- Strong, consistent leadership across the squadron
- The ability to mentor junior NCOs and support staff-led training
- High standards in drill, behaviour, and responsibility
- A track record of stepping up during events, activities, and courses

FS Parker has shown all of this and more - a brilliant example to the cadets coming up behind her.

🔷 Cpl Cleverley → Sergeant
Becoming a Sergeant means taking on wider responsibility, including:
- Leading a flight of cadets and supporting corporals
- Delivering and helping plan training
- Showing maturity, reliability, and confidence in leadership roles
- Maintaining excellent standards and setting the tone for others

Sgt Cleverley has consistently demonstrated these qualities and continues to grow as a leader within the squadron.

🔷 Cdt Corlett → Corporal
Promotion to Corporal is the first step on the NCO ladder. Cadets earn it by showing:
- Emerging leadership potential
- Strong participation and enthusiasm
- The ability to take charge of small groups
- Good communication and teamwork

Cpl Corlett has shown great promise and is ready to take on the responsibilities of a junior NCO.

Visit from Tommy O'connor, founder of Rock Steady Boxing

Last parade night we were joined by a truly inspiring guest, Tommy O’Connor, founder of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB). Tommy is ex‑Army, a former professional boxer, and a qualified RSB instructor — but what makes his story even more powerful is that he also lives with Parkinson’s himself.

Tommy shared how his journey took him all the way to Indianapolis to learn how non‑contact boxing can help people fight back against Parkinson’s symptoms. Through RSB, boxers work on balance, coordination, strength, footwork and cognitive drills - all designed to slow progression, improve mobility, and build confidence. It’s exercise with purpose, community, and resilience at its core.

Today, Tommy runs two RSB centres in Widnes and Warrington, with several coaches and over 160 boxers (and growing). His passion for helping others, and his determination to turn his own challenges into leadership, made a huge impact on our cadets.

A massive thank you to Tommy for visiting 90 (Speke) Squadron and showing our young people what courage, service, and fighting spirit really look like.

⭐ Blue Road Marching Success for 90 (Speke) Squadron & 610 (City of Chester) Squadron!

A huge congratulations to cadets from 90 (Speke) & 610 Squadrons who have successfully completed and been awarded their Blue Road Marching Badge. A brilliant achievement that reflects commitment, discipline, and teamwork.

🚶 What Road Marching Is in RAFAC
Road Marching is a core RAFAC activity that builds endurance, resilience, pacing discipline, and teamwork. Cadets learn how to march safely over distance, manage their kit, look after their feet, and maintain a steady pace as a group. It’s a physical challenge (& also a mental one) teaching cadets how to push themselves while supporting others.

📘 Road Marching Levels in RAFAC
Blue Badge – The foundation level. Cadets learn the basics of safe marching, pacing, hydration, foot care, and group discipline. Completing this level opens the door to longer-distance events and more advanced training.

Bronze Badge – Builds on endurance and technique, introducing longer routes and more structured training.

Silver Badge – Focuses on sustained distance, navigation awareness, and preparation for major marching events.

Gold Badge – The highest level, often linked to major achievements such as participation in Nijmegen - a world‑renowned multi‑day marching event in the Netherlands.

🏅 What Cadets Can Achieve
With their Blue Badge now secured, these cadets can progress through the Road Marching pathway, take part in longer training routes, support squadron marching teams, and eventually work toward prestigious events like Nijmegen. It’s a fantastic stepping stone that builds confidence and capability.

A massive well done to all cadets involved - your effort, attitude, and determination have been outstanding.

90 (Speke) Squadron – Marshmallow Challenge Night 🍡🧠

Tonight’s parade night brought a brilliant mix of creativity, teamwork, and a bit of physics as our cadets took on the Marshmallow Challenge - and they absolutely delivered.

Two teams, two very different sets of materials:

- Team 1: Large marshmallows + spaghetti
- Team 2: Small marshmallows + cocktail sticks

The mission?
Build the sturdiest free‑standing structure and keep it upright for two full minutes while being inspected (and enthusiastically poked!) by the OC.

Both teams rose to the challenge, producing impressive, stable builds that held firm through prodding, poking, and pressure testing. The creativity on display was outstanding - and yes, the power of triangles made more than one appearance.

Beyond the fun, cadets picked up some great lessons in:

🧠 Problem‑solving
🏗️ Basic physics & structural strength
📐Why triangles really are the basics of engineering

A fantastic activity with plenty of laughs, learning, and leadership.

A huge congratulations to Sergeant Parker, who has officially achieved Gold Leadership — the highest level of leadership training within the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. This is an outstanding milestone and a testament to Parker’s commitment, consistency, and capability as a senior cadet within 90 (Speke).

⭐ What Gold Leadership Means in RAFAC
Gold Leadership is the top tier of the RAFAC leadership pathway. It’s designed to develop cadets into confident, capable leaders who can plan, brief, motivate, and manage teams in challenging and dynamic situations.

To achieve Gold, cadets must demonstrate:

- Advanced leadership theory and practical understanding
- Strong communication and briefing skills
- Effective decision‑making under pressure
- The ability to lead teams through complex tasks
