Anthony Walker Foundation

The Anthony Walker Foundation is a registered charity established by Anthony's family after his racially motivated murder in 2005.

AWF works to prevent youth involvement in hate crime by working with all young people across racial groups to feel secure in their identity and empowered to welcome and celebrate diversity in their communities. Primarily through arts and education based workshops on diversity and inclusion delivered locally and nationally through schools and youth clubs, in addition to the annual arts/sport/educat

ion AWF festival in Liverpool celebrating diversity in the month of Anthony’s anniversary. Such activities and events contribute to improving community cohesion and promotes social inclusion. Nationally, our involvement and activities include:
◾Anthony Walker Law Bursary with Crown Prosecution Service and Liverpool John Moores University, aimed at supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to become a lawyer (this was Anthony’s aspiration
◾Annual Anthony Walker Memorial Lecture with National Union of Teachers
◾Anti-racist education resource film ‘Colour Blind’ supported by Liverpool FC and Comic Relief
◾Talks/workshops for national conferences
◾Contribution to Show Racism the Red Card & Kick it Out Campaigns

Recently we visited Oakdene Primary to share our ‘Celebration of Diversity’ assembly and workshops with their students.

“Our pupils gained so much from the clear messages and powerful learning around anti‑racism and diversity.”

As a result of the assembly, the Year 1, Year3, Year4 and Year6 students were inspired to create Respect and Diversity posters, which they have shared with us.

Thank you to Oakdene for welcoming us and for such wonderful feedback.

Part of our mission is to help everyone to understand and celebrate diversity, and to promote kindness so what was done to Anthony doesn't happen to another family. Our education sessions and assemblies are tailored to be suitable for children of all ages, so we are so thrilled when we receive messages like this one from Zachary's mum:

"Zachary came home absolutely buzzing with excitement — he told me everything he could remember and spoke so thoughtfully about racism, fairness, and how each of us can have a positive impact on the world. It was genuinely moving to hear how much the experience stayed with him."

Holi, the vibrant Hindu festival of colours, marks the beginning of spring with a joyous annual celebration steeped in cultural and religious significance. Observed widely in India, Nepal, other South Asian nations, and across the global diaspora, the festival is a celebration of love, and symbolises rebirth and rejuvenation – a time to embrace positivity and release negative energies.

For one of Holi’s most iconic traditions, participants, often dressed in white, take to the streets to playfully douse each other with vibrant powdered dyes, creating a kaleidoscope of pigments and shared happiness.

This month we have been delighted to support the International Slavery Museum in the design of an educational space in the museum (currently closed for redevelopment) that will carry Anthony’s name and continue his legacy.

Students from four of our ‘Tackling Racism in Schools Awards’ programme partner schools: Childwall Sports and Science Academy, Belvedere Academy, St. Hilda’s Church of England High School, and Liverpool College have attended two workshops, where they worked with the Learning and Participation team from the International Slavery Museum, and with Kossy Nnachetta, an architect from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

Dr. Gee Walker also attended the sessions, moving around the room to hear from the students, speaking to them in smaller groups and giving feedback and praise for their ideas.

We are all excited to see the designs and see the students’ ideas come to life in the Anthony Walker Education Centre, and will keep you updated when we can!

We’d like to give a big thank you to our TRSA Ambassadors for their enthusiastic involvement, it was incredible to hear all your thoughts. And thank you to National Museums Liverpool for this opportunity, which continues the long-standing partnership between National Museums Liverpool and Anthony Walker Foundation, and invites the next generation to design a learning space that will be used by other young people for generations to come.

Huge thanks to our newest TRSA Ambassadors at The Heath Secondary School, Runcorn!

Jude Agis and the TRSA team spent three inspiring days with Year 8, delivering workshops on unconscious bias, anti-racism, and celebrating diversity. Our Ambassadors were incredible, confident, engaged, and leading the way in creating a school culture where everyone feels valued.

The Head Teacher shared how powerful the sessions were: “These three days reinforced just how much our students and our staff need this support. Our Ambassadors are already bigger, stronger, and more confident. We are committed to continuing this important work and supporting every student to thrive.”

Students shared experiences, made pledges of support, and suggested brilliant ideas like culture days to celebrate diversity. The positive energy in the school was palpable, and we’re so proud of the impact already being made!

We can’t wait to see all the amazing initiatives the Heath Ambassadors lead this year and we will celebrate them at the TRSA Awards in July!
