Since 1938 Merseyside Civic Society has helped to preserve key elements of the best of the area's past, such as the Albert Dock and the Lyceum, as well as demanding design quality for the future. We admire and cherish the buildings and associated spaces that celebrate the area's past economic and cultural status and continue to contribute to its uniquely rich architectural and urban design heritag

e. We also believe the city and sub-region have a splendid future and want to contribute to making it all the more splendid. Although Liverpool is at the hub of our activities, we embrace the whole of Merseyside and take a concerned interest in its environmental development and regeneration. As a charitable organisation, we depend upon subscriptions and membership renewals. We encourage those who share our concerns to attend MCS events and to maintain awareness of, and participate in, our activities. The aims of Merseyside Civic Society can be summarised as follows:

* To stimulate public interest in the enhancement of the quality of life in the city region

* To engage in debate and discussion and conduct research in support of this aim
* To promote high standards of town planning, architecture and design in the area

* To ensure the preservation, conservation, development, improvement and careful stewardship of features of general public amenity
* To seek to safeguard areas and structures of historic and/or public interest

* To strengthen links between interested bodies, such as the Civic Trust and local civic and amenity societies, and communicate shared interests/information via the internet

* To hold occasional meetings, lectures and exhibitions

* To publish reports, books and other relevant material on matters of shared concern

* To represent local interests at public inquiries, and to offer constructive comment on proposed schemes and on other occasions when the above issues are debated

We welcome new developments that sustain, enhance and complement the area's unique stock of architectural and urban design assets. Part of our role is to ensure that what is built is of sufficiently high quality of design and ex*****on to justify a place in our city region and to make a positive contribution to the heritage that we bequeath to future generations.

As part of this year’s Liverpool Architecture Festival, we’re delighted to present St Helens: Glass Past, Glass Present and Glass Future — a guided walking tour that traces the evolution of a town built on industry and imagination. With a number of festival events already sold out, we’re pleased to offer this fantastic opportunity to join one of the remaining events still open for booking.

We begin at the magnificent St Helens Town Hall, celebrating its 150th anniversary, before exploring the architectural legacy of the town’s industrial past. The tour then steps inside the historic Gamble Building, currently undergoing an exciting transformation that will soon see it become home to the library and archives, a youth hub, and new office space, a powerful example of heritage being reimagined for modern community life.

Our journey concludes at the St Helens Transport Interchange, a sleek and contemporary gateway that reflects the town’s ongoing regeneration and its vision for the future.

Once again, Merseyside Civic Society is delighted to collaborate with Liverpool Architecture Festival to offer a programme of FREE walks, visits and discussions throughout the Liverpool City Region.

This year’s programme also shines a spotlight on Bootle, a town with a proud industrial and maritime heritage that is now looking firmly to the future. As Sefton puts forward its Borough of Culture bid, Bootle is championing creativity, community and culture as drivers of renewal from grassroots arts to bold regeneration projects that celebrate local identity.

As part of this programme, we’re looking forward to our Destination Bootle event with SAFE Regeneration, an inspiring organisation working at the heart of community led change. SAFE supports local people to build neighbourhoods, develop new businesses, and lead place based social action, and has developed its innovative Neighbourhood Transformation Planning Tool in partnership with the University of Liverpool.

Our visit on Tuesday 2 June 2026, will include presentations from Brian Dawe, SAFE CEO, and Dr Kerry Traynor, Chair of Trustees and Senior Lecturer in Professional and Media Writing at the University of Liverpool. This will be followed by a walking tour of the site and its facilities, centred around the much loved Lock and Quay community pub, with an opportunity to enjoy their hospitality.

A fascinating look at regeneration shaped by creativity, collaboration and community.

Guided Walk
From Exchange Flags to the Waterfront: Liverpool’s Merchant Story

A guided walk led by Blue Badge Guide Heather Thrift exploring Liverpool's Merchant Story will take place this Tuesday 5th May 2026, from 6pm – 7.30pm (meeting at 5.45pm).

The walk will explore how Liverpool merchants made their money from slavery and the enslaved economy, principally through the lens of shipping businesses and the cotton trade. It will focus on the buildings they built, the banks they banked with, the insurance companies they insured with and the networks they belonged to. It will also explore how that legacy is acknowledged today and touch on future plans.

This is a relatively short walk concentrated in the business district around Liverpool Town Hall which is packed with merchant history.

There are still a few tickets available, and you can book your place now via the Eventbrite link below:
