🎨 Chinatown Mural Project – Community Call-Out 🌟
Yesterday, we held an inspiring public consultation at Pagoda Arts Centre for the new Chinatown mural.
The Chinatown Mural Project is by Global Arts Ltd, with Zap Graffiti selected through public vote as the artist delivering the mural. The open public voting process ran for three weeks, with Zap Graffiti receiving 45% of the total votes.
The consultation brought together local residents, community members and stakeholders to share ideas, stories and reflections on what Liverpool’s Chinatown represents — past, present and future.
💬 Key themes that emerged from the discussion included:
• Energy, movement and vitality – with the Horse symbolising momentum, resilience and renewal
• Cultural heritage and strength – dragons, calligraphy and continuity across generations
• Community, light and celebration – lanterns/firecrackers as symbols of welcome, warmth and belonging
• Integration and connection – linking past & present, tradition & contemporary life, Chinatown & the wider city
• Liverpool–China links – maritime history, trade, migration and global exchange
These ideas strongly connect with the Fire Horse theme, reflecting Chinatown as a living, evolving part of Liverpool — rooted in heritage and shaped by movement, exchange and collective identity.
📸 We’d love YOUR contribution
If you couldn’t attend yesterday, there’s still time to be involved.
Community members are warmly invited to submit a photograph of an object that represents Liverpool’s Chinatown — past or present.
This could relate to:
• Personal or family history
• Cultural practice or tradition
• Migration, trade or work
• Everyday life in Chinatown
These images will help inform the mural’s visual language and narrative development.
📩 Deadline for submissions: 9 February. (DM or email: [email protected])
✨ Thank you to everyone who took part, voted, and shared their voices. This mural is being shaped with the community, and we welcome continued participation
