On Saturday 18th July, Sudan’s eclectic and vibrant cuisine and literature will be explored at The Black-E Liverpool

The Sudanese Culinary Arts and Literature event explores the meaning of home through food, art, and storytelling, in collaboration with the London-based publisher, the Almas Art Foundation.

Centred around the work of British-Sudanese food archivist - and author of The Sudanese Kitchen - Omer Tijani, the event brings together recipes, oral histories, and cultural narratives that preserve and celebrate Sudan’s heritage. Sudanese food will also be available for all attendees!

The Sudanese Kitchen began as a long-term documentation project and website led by Omer Al Tijani, and developed into a landmark cookbook and cultural archive that collects over 100 recipes and contextual essays, as well as personal and field photographs to present Sudan’s culinary diversity.

The event will be hosted by Sherif Dhaimish

Sherif Dhaimish is Sales Director at Kulturalis, a London-based publishing company devoted to cross-cultural exchange, working with museums, galleries, heritage sites and cultural institutions around the world. He is also director of Pendle Press, a cultural preservation project established in 2021. Sherif holds a BA in Communication Studies from the University of Leeds and an MA in Critical Theory from King's College London. He also has experience in curation and co-authored How You Make Me Feel (Velocity Press, 2024), a book on the drum and bass pioneer Marcus Intalex.

This year’s festival launches on Friday 17th July with LAAF favourites, the Al-Awhadel Band, returning to Liverpool to perform in the iconic St George's Hall Liverpool Concert Room.

Spotlighting the evocative sounds of the oud, the band is led by Yaser Awdhali, an artist and composer from Aden, Yemen. Yaser began his artistic career in childhood, learning to play the oud at a young age, influenced by his father, the great artist Ahmed Omar Awdhali - a celebrated musician with a long and distinguished career across the Gulf states. Now Yaser himself has earned the title 'Artist of the Diaspora!’

Expect a celebration of Yemeni music, with the mesmerising Al-Awhadel Band.

Volunteer Call Out for LAAF 2026!

We're looking for committed volunteers to play a key part in realising the UK’s premier annual festival of Arab arts and culture in Liverpool this summer.

Would you like to learn new skills and meet new people? Are you interested in learning about how an international arts festival works, or develop your experience of working with people in a public-facing arts setting?

Liverpool Arab Arts Festival runs 17th – 26th July 2026. We're looking for support to deliver key events during the festival.

Volunteers will need to be available during the festival period and ideally commit to two shifts. Working with our small but dedicated team will provide volunteers with practical experience of event logistics and audience engagement in a public-facing environment.

Roles can range from: helping set up for events; welcoming audience members; checking ticketing; supporting with the sales of merchandise; distributing surveys; and responding to audience questions…and much more!

Travel expenses will be covered, along with expenses towards lunch, if applicable for the shift.

Volunteers must be based within commuting distance of Liverpool as we are unable to fund long distance travel or accommodation. A full volunteer induction will be held before the festival.

If interested, please fill in the form here: https://tinyurl.com/9ja9thtz

Thursday 23rd July, 6pm - 8.30pm | Bluecoat

Join us for a celebration of storytelling, writing and critical thinking from the Syrian Capital, in association with Comma Press

Damascus is a city of contradictions…✨

Simultaneously the oldest city in the world, rich with Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic architecture, and one of the most modern and developed in the Middle East, it stands at a crossroads between East and West, past and future, peace and war.

The latest instalment in Comma’s ‘Reading the City’ series is filled with the perspectives of ordinary Syrians we never read about in the news.

We’d love to invite you to an evening of readings, translations and discussions about the challenges that Damascus has survived and what lies ahead in these most precarious times.

We’ll be joined by three speakers – Odai Al-Zoubi, a Syrian short story writer born in Damascus; Zaher Omareen, a war correspondent, filmmaker and writer who has worked in Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sudan and Iraq; and Majd Abu Shawish, a Gaza-born, Manchester based translator, poet and writer.

My Father and Qaddafi

Official UK Premiere - Film Screening & Q&A
Tuesday 21st July, 6:00 pm-8:30 pm
Bluecoat, Liverpool

A daughter unravels the disappearance of her father, the peaceful opposition leader to Qaddafi, and pieces together her mother’s 19-year search to find him. Without any memory of her father, she tries to reconnect with him and reconcile with her Libyan identity.

My Father and Qaddafi takes the audience on a raw and reflective journey as Jihan pieces together a father she barely remembers, while discovering the troubled history and politics of Libya. Her journey starts from fading personal memories, leading to encounters with family members, her father’s peers, and historical archive footage.

Hoping at first to uncover the truth, Jihan instead transforms the mystery into a curiosity that brings her closer to her father and her Libyan identity. She approaches politics not as a distant subject, but as a lived experience that penetrates into every human relationship – even between a little girl and her father.

Directed by Jihan K
