Everton de Viña del Mar remains hungry for more after a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Universidad de Chile at Sausalito on Saturday night. While the visitors arrived with the "favorite" tag, Walter Ribonetto’s men proved they were more than a match for Gago’s side, neutralizing their attack and coming inches away from securing all three points.
The defining moment of the first half—and perhaps the match—came in the 43rd minute. Braian Martínez was clattered by goalkeeper Gabriel Castellón in the box. A clear penalty and a second yellow card for the keeper seemed certain, which would have left La U with ten men and a backup goalie.
However, in a move that frustrated the Sausalito faithful, VAR intervened to find a marginal offside in the buildup. It was a massive letdown for the Ruleteros, as the decision spared the visitors a certain goal. Our keeper, Ignacio "Nacho" González, was once again a wall. His 5 key saves kept the sheet clean and provided the security the defense needed to handle the pressure.
In the second half, Ribonetto looked to the bench for a hero, bringing on Cristian Palacios. The "Chorri" nearly wrote the perfect headline against his former club, finding the back of the net and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Sadly, the linesman’s flag cut the celebrations short for offside, leaving the Gold and Blue fans wondering what might have been. Despite the frustration of the disallowed goals and the overturned penalty, Everton showed great tactical discipline. The defensive line—Vidal, Magallanes, Oyarzún, and Baeza—was immense, effectively shutting down Gago's expensive frontline and forcing them into "total insignificance" by the final whistle We take the point and move to 9 points in the table. While we sit in 14th, the performance today showed we can go toe-to-toe with the top of the league. Next up: we stay at the Sausalito to take on Cobresal.
