Our team recently joined forces with volunteers from B&Q for a Community Day at the Joseph Lappin Centre - a vital community space supporting local people and families every single week.

Together, Shelter staff, B&Q volunteers and centre staff rolled up their sleeves to help with decorating, ceiling repairs and general improvements around the building - helping to create a brighter, more welcoming environment for the thousands of people who use the centre each week.

But the day was about more than just paint brushes and repairs. It was about people coming together, sharing stories, plenty of laughs, music, teamwork and showing what’s possible when a community supports one another.

Small acts of kindness can make a big difference - and this was one of them. 💛

We love our volunteers at Shelter ❤️

Continuing our stories of hope – we’re sharing inspiring volunteering to employment stories from Alice and Tharmiga. They both were volunteers with Shelter and have since gone on to work full-time with us in the Mass Participation and Community Fundraising teams, respectively.

Alice (pictured above) says the best thing about volunteering at Shelter is:
🗣️ ‘Feeling like you’re making a difference in the Fight for Home. Moving to London really highlighted to me the severity of the current housing situation and joining a Fight for Home group to raise funds for Shelter was so rewarding. It felt like I was having a positive impact and using my skills for good.

It also helped me build confidence, meet a wide variety of people and enable me to become employed at Shelter full-time, which has so far been an exciting and fulfilling career.’

Tharmiga (pictured below), meanwhile had this to say:
🗣️ ‘The best thing about volunteering at Shelter is the flexibility. I started volunteering with Shelter in 2024 and was able to balance it with a full-time job. It has also developed my fundraising skills and allowed me to develop a rewarding career in the homelessness sector.’
