What a whirlwind of a year for the 1st Littleport Target Sports Team!

We’ve spent the last twelve months focused on precision, safety, and—most importantly—ensuring as many young people as possible have the chance to pick up a bow or a tomahawk.
It has been a privilege to serve not just our own group, but the wider scouting and guiding community. Whether it was running dedicated archery and tomahawk weeks for our Scouts, hosting sessions for our Young Leaders and district Explorers, or welcoming local Brownies, Guides, and 1st Witchford Cubs, seeing that look of concentration turn into a bullseye is why we do what we do.

Our commitment to the wider community has kept us busy, from supporting county events like the Cub Challenge day and Scout Activity Weekend to assisting at the Cambridge District Cub Camp. Closer to home, we were proud to support Ely District at the St. George’s Day parade and the Ely Rugby Club day, alongside helping our own fundraising team at Aquafest.

This year wasn't just about showing up; it was about growing. We’ve significantly expanded our archery team and invested heavily in our kit, specifically to broaden our inclusion offering so that every young person, regardless of ability, has the chance to participate.

Looking ahead, we aren’t slowing down. We are already planning to add more sports to our repertoire—with our eyes set on fencing and air rifles—as we continue to develop the premier target sports hub in the county.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on the range this year. We can’t wait to see you all again in September for another year of hitting the mark!

Come join our Target Team. Whether you have experience or are completely new to target sports, we provide full training and certification to get you range-ready. This is a flexible way to get involved—we are looking for people who can assist with our various activities and district events across the year, fitting in whenever your personal availability allows.

If you’re interested in supporting our Scouts and wider community in a dynamic, hands-on way, we’d love to hear from you. Please drop us a message to find out more about what’s involved!

Pride Month

It may have looked like we forgot the month, but behind the scenes we have been busy working away. This year we have formed a Scout Council, formed of Scouts, Explorers and Network members to explore Pride and LGBT+ engagement in the group. Hopefully soon we can share more exciting news with everyone. These wonderful Young People are working towards their YouShape awards

In the words of our council:
As hatred and prejudice continue to rise we, as a community, must stick together stronger than ever. As scouts one of our new mottos is a Place to Belong, and that means everyone. So as the young people at 1st Littleport Scouts we want to speak up and engage our skills as scouts to help and support the lgbtq+ community of Littleport and celebrate the brilliant people within our community and have a Place to Belong for all.

It is Day 6 of Volunteers' Week, and today we are absolutely thrilled to introduce Adam, our brilliant soon-to-be Chair of the Board of Trustees! 📋🌟

Adam stepped up to take on the role of Chair to support the group as a whole. As a parent, he knows firsthand how vital a supportive, inclusive environment is, and he wanted to play his part in keeping that community strong.

For Adam, a great group requires enthusiastic volunteers to truly succeed and provide what is ultimately a key public service for local young people—and he is proud to be a part of making that happen.

His favorite bit of inspiration captures that adventurous spirit perfectly: “Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” — T.S. Eliot

That willingness to push boundaries and support every individual shows up in his proudest moment with the group so far: seeing Eddie thrive in a team environment, especially within an open, welcoming, and inclusive space like Harley Scouts.

Adam’s dedication to keeping our group inclusive, organised, and ready for the future is exactly what leadership is about. We are incredibly lucky to have him stepping into the Chair role to help guide our big family. Thank you for your commitment and vision, Adam! 💛

(As for the bacon sarnie debrief? Adam confessed he doesn’t actually know all the complicated ways people order them. He's just happy with bacon and bread, however it comes—making him officially the easiest order for the camp kitchen crew so far! 🥓🍞)

It is Day 5 of Volunteers' Week, and today we are shining the spotlight on one of the vital behind-the-scenes heroes who keeps our group running smoothly: Anne, our amazing Trustee and Treasurer! 💰💼

Anne joined the team two years ago when First Littleport was searching for a Treasurer. Wanting to step up and help where she could, she dove right into the role and has been a cornerstone of our executive committee ever since.

While our leaders are out in the field running games and camps, Anne is working hard in the background to ensure the group has the solid foundation it needs to thrive.

“I think the Scouts is an amazing organisation providing brilliant opportunities and exposure for children to play and learn together and to have experiences that they otherwise would not have. I have the utmost respect for the many leaders who give up so much of their time and put so much into offering this for children, and I was motivated to help when 1st Littleport were struggling to find a Treasurer and I wanted to be able to help where I could. I am proud to be involved in the Scouts and find that rewarding.”

Anne’s dedication is a fantastic reminder that volunteering with the Scouts isn't just about tying knots or pitching tents—it takes a whole village of diverse skills to keep the adventure alive.
Thank you for your steady hands on the numbers, your brilliant support, and your dedication to making sure our young people get the best experiences possible, Anne! 💛

(We don't have Anne's official bacon sarnie order on file just yet, but we're pretty sure managing the group's spreadsheets means she’s earned a gold-tier catering pass! 🥓✨)

It is Day 4 of Volunteers' Week, and today we are celebrating a true Littleport institution: Akela (Dan)! 6,7 6,7 6,7

Dan (6,7) is officially our longest-serving Littleport volunteer, having dedicated an incredible 15 years to the group. As the leader of our Cubs pack, he’s seen it all, done it all, and survived it all.

What keeps him going after a decade and a half? It’s the hilarious, chaotic, and deeply rewarding journey of watching young people find their feet.

"Cubs is never dull. At that age, children develop so fast. When they move up from Beavers, they're generally quiet and wide-eyed. After a few weeks their personalities really come out. Six months in, they're basically feral; I love it.”

While Dan (6,7) was deciding on his proudest moment he fired his bow, completely missing the target and decided "definitely that's not my proudest moment" 🏹🎯 His actual proudest moments happen away from the archery range.

For Dan (6,7), nothing beats the feeling of watching a Cub conquer their fears. His proudest moments are always when one of our Cubs achieves something they were absolutely adamant they couldn't do, simply because they lacked confidence or felt afraid. Seeing them break through those barriers is what 15 years of leadership is all about.

Dan (6,7), thank you for your incredible dedication, your brilliant humour, and for steering the Cub ship so masterfully for 15 years. Littleport wouldn't be the same without you! 💛

(As for the bacon sarnie situation... Dan’s (6,7) order is highly specific, incredibly elite, and slightly dramatic. It requires malted brown bread, butter exclusively from Guernsey cows, crispy bacon from a black spotted pig named Evan, and brown sauce—as dark as his soul. 🥓🖤

It is Day 3 of Volunteers' Week, and today we are celebrating the brilliant Lilly, one of our incredible Scout section volunteers! 🏕️✨

Lilly has been leading the adventure with us for two years now, and to say she’s packed a lot into that time would be a massive understatement. From freezing cold winter camps at Fire and Ice to exhausting three-hour hikes, she’s been there for it all. She’s cheered them on during an epic 10-day trip to Ireland, and—crucially—she was right there to witness the legendary moment our Scouts fell into the river during Aquafest! 🛶💦

But for Lilly, the true magic of Scouting isn't just about the wild adventures or the hilarious mishaps along the way.
"The absolute best thing about being a leader is watching the Scouts learn, push their boundaries, and become genuinely confident in their own skills."

Lilly’s energy, dedication, and willingness to dive into any adventure (no matter how cold or muddy!) make her such an asset to our team. Thank you for everything you do to inspire and support our Scouts, Lilly! 💛

(And for the camp kitchen crew: Lilly keeps her bacon butty strictly minimalist. Just bacon and bread. Absolutely no butter, no sauce, no fuss! 🥓🍞)

It is Day 2 of Volunteers' Week, and today we are shining the spotlight on another absolute member of our team: Cassie! 🌟
Cassie’s Scouting journey has come full circle. She started out in Scouts, stepped up as a Young Leader for her Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award, and loved it so much she stayed on. Four years later she now joins us weekly as an adult volunteer. She brings her energy to both our Squirrels and Harley Scouts! 🐿️🧭

In fact, Cassie has been a cornerstone of our Squirrels section since the very day it opened four years ago. Her absolute favourite part of the role? Watching the children learn new skills, build lasting friendships, and have the absolute best time doing it.

“Scouting is something I was involved in when I was younger and have always enjoyed being a part of. Being involved in an organisation that supports others as well as myself has had such a positive impact on me. The team I'm part of is funny, crazy, and always there to encourage and support me.”

Cassie is living proof of how volunteering builds you up just as much as you build up the young people around you. We are incredibly lucky to have her on the team and inspiring our youngest sections. But her story also highlights the importance of Young Leaders, which we are all about in 1st Littleport.

Thank you for everything you do, Cassie! Your dedication, support, and big heart make a massive difference every single week. 💛

If you're keeping track of the kitchen orders: Cassie’s perfect bacon sarnie requires soft bacon, a dollop of ketchup, and it MUST be cut into triangles. No exceptions! 🥪✨
