We have now completed the installation of the Phase 3 swift boxes and callers. Across the village, we now have an impressive total of 47 swift boxes, 29 house martin cups, and 4 swallow cups. This is a fantastic community achievement! We are incredibly grateful to Paul Stevens for installing the boxes and cups for us, and for sharing his expertise and advice throughout the project.

Excitingly, we have confirmed that swifts have laid eggs in at least three of the boxes. One box currently contains a single egg. As a typical swift clutch consists of two to three eggs, a second egg is usually laid two to three days after the first, with a third egg sometimes following up to 72 hours later. In the other two boxes, swifts are already incubating their eggs.

Swift parents wait until the clutch is complete before beginning incubation, ensuring that the chicks hatch closer together. Both adults share incubation duties and take turns foraging for food. At night, they snuggle together in the nest. The incubation period typically lasts between 19 and 23 days.

Another pair of swifts has settled into one of the boxes installed on Yapton Road. Meanwhile, house martins are busy chattering and nesting around the estates off Horsemere Green Lane, swallows can be seen feeding low over the agricultural fields, and swifts are feeding high in the sky.

Happy summer, everyone!

Absolutely delighted to hear from our resident Patricia that a pair of swifts have now entered one of the boxes we installed for her on Yapton Road, Climping.

Last year there was plenty of swift activity around the box, and now we finally have a pair moving in — wonderful news for the project and for the village.

A brilliant photograph of the swift was kindly taken by neighbour Gary Burtenshaw.

It’s fantastic to see the whole village getting behind this project and supporting these remarkable birds.
