Littlehampton Society

Littlehampton Society Your Local Amenity Charity working for positive change in our town A committee was setup operating under the constitution of the nationwide Civic Trust.

The Society, formed in 1972 by Mrs Vera Joynes and other residents, was to strongly oppose attempts to open up West Beach and its approaches. This area's quiet character and unspoilt environment was threatened by motor traffic, new-build and other man-made encroachments. Membership grew and the Society communicated its activities to the local press, providing an opportunity for local people to exp

ress their opinions on issues that concerned them. A newsletter was published called Link and the Society was registered as a charity and associated with a number of other local amenities groups.

🌟 Honouring Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett 🌟

We were very pleased to be at the unveiling today of a new blue plaque in Littlehampton for suffragist Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, (1847–1929).
She is remembered as one of the foremost champions of women’s rights and democratic reform in British history. Her role as the leader of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), and her tireless advocacy for peaceful and lawful campaigning, left an indelible mark on the struggle for gender equality.

It is particularly fitting that this tribute be located in Littlehampton at the United Reformed Church hall. In the 1880s, Millicent lived for a time with her sisters in Rustington and continued to carry out peaceful campaigning for the enfranchisement of women. In 1918, just a few days after women were granted the right to vote, Millicent chose to hold a public meeting in the Lecture Hall in Littlehampton’s Congregational Church (now the United Reformed Church) to celebrate the groundbreaking event. The Littlehampton Observer reported “Mrs. Fawcett, who was enthusiastically received, said it had been her privilege to take a fairly active part in women’s suffrage since 1867.”
