This is Whitecroft, which once stood in Ash Lane, where the Whitecroft block of flats now is.

This beautiful Dutch gabled house was built for Mary Christian Dundas Hamilton, who had also built Marigolds in Holmes Lane.

It was designed by Clothilde Brewster, an early female architect, in the very early 1900s.

The elfin oak at Brough House. Carved by the same sculptor as the Elfin Oak in Kensington Gardens, London, Ivor Innes. Sadly the Rustington one was taken down when the house was demolished. The Gilberts now stand on the site.

The building on the left is Brough House, on the sea front. In the garden was a little cottage for the children to play in. It had a kitchen and a bedroom and it was later converted to a (very small!) dwelling, the roof having been raised. The garden was full of Alice in Wonderland figures, and there was also a Japanese temple, and a carved tree trunk, full of elves and fairies. It must have been a magical place.

This was a bit too far out of our way to fit into the tour around the village, so thought I’d tack it on here. This is West Preston Manor, in Station Road, in, I think, the early 1900s. Squire Bushby is the gentleman third from the right. This is a meeting of the beagles - quite the social event.
