Are you a frontline worker or volunteer interacting with members of the public?

Our next free Advice First Aid session takes place at the John Daniel Centre, Penzance on Mon 17 August 10am-4pm.

We want people in direct contact with members of the public to feel confident in discussions about available help for issues like benefits, housing and employment.

Participants don't need to give advice themselves but will learn how to ask the right questions, identify useful sources of information and to know when to refer more urgent, complex cases to Citizens Advice advisers.

Myth:

I have savings, so I can’t claim Universal Credit.

Fact:

Savings will not affect your entitlement until they are more than £6,000, and will only stop you from being entitled if they are over £16,000.
If you have savings over £16,000 you may still be entitled to other benefits such as New Style Job Seeker's Allowance/Employment and Support Allowance.
For help to calculate how much Universal Credit you might be entitled to, you can contact our Help to Claim team: citizensadviceplymouth.org.uk/benefits/

Myth: I can only get help for 2 of my children from Universal Credit

Fact: The government removed the 2 Child Limit from 6th April this year, so you could get the Universal Credit child element for all children in your household

Just be aware that, depending on your circumstances, you might still be affected by the ‘benefit cap’, which limits how much households can be paid from benefits.
