While visiting the south coast, Canon William Henry Cooper discovered dozens of retired priests, without any income, living in Workhouses. He was determined to do something, and set about the task of founding a new community, of which he was to become the first Warden. The College was originally named “The Homes of St Barnabas” and based in Dormans Park, Surrey, but moved to its present location a
djacent to Dormans Station in 1900. The present College of St Barnabas is a residential community of retired Anglican Christians, set in beautiful Surrey countryside. Single people and couples are welcome; there are facilities for visitors and guests. Residents of the College benefit from the security of knowing that their home is assured, no matter what their economic situation. No one is prevented from becoming or remaining a resident through lack of means. In Spanish speaking countries the word ‘Jubilación’ is used to describe retirement. This is both a Latin and a Biblical word relating to restoration, re-creation, getting the balance right, and new beginnings. Residents therefore, are positively encouraged to lead active, independent lives. There is a Care Wing, to which both internal and direct admission is possible, providing domiciliary and minor nursing care. It is also possible to offer respite care. Sheltered ‘Cloister’ flats have separate sitting rooms, bedrooms and en suite facilities. We have three Libraries and a well equipped Common Room, which serves as a meeting place for a number of resident interest groups. Meals are served in the Refectory or may be taken privately when necessary. There are two Chapels; the Eucharist and Evensong are celebrated daily. The daily offering of prayer is one of the principal elements of the College. The Upper Chapel is laid out in the traditional collegiate pattern. The Lower Chapel has no steps to enable Priests to continue to celebrate the Eucharist for as long as they wish and are able to do so. Occasional Quiet Days and private retreats can be accommodated.
