Today is World Teachers' Day.

To the teachers who challenged us, encouraged us, noticed potential before we did, and kept showing up: thank you.

Ahead of , Phil and Sam from Aprender joined the Commonwealth Education Trust and the Council for Education in the Commonwealth at Parliament to explore an urgent question:

How can teachers in low-resource contexts access professional development that is practical, sustained and relevant?

The gathering reminded us that meaningful partnerships take time, mistakes need not define a young person’s future, and teacher development creates its greatest impact when educators can apply it in their own classrooms and communities.

Data can show patterns, progress and what may be changing over time. But the experiences of teachers, school leaders and learners help us understand what those changes actually mean in practice.

That is why both evidence and lived experience matter.

By combining what the data tells us with what people tell us, we can keep learning, asking better questions and strengthening the work.

Some of the questions people ask most often about Aprender are simple but important.

Aprender does not work directly with children. Its work focuses on strengthening the adults, schools and systems around children's learning.

It is also not a grant-making organisation. Its support is not financial aid to schools or individuals, but professional development, coaching and learning support.

At its core, Aprender helps schools and educators improve teaching and learning through practical, evidence-informed development that builds long-term local capacity.

Evangeline was once terrified of water. But her swimming teacher, Mrs Kioko, saw something in her that Evangeline had not yet learned to see in herself.

Through patience, encouragement and belief, fear gradually gave way to courage.

The lesson may have been about swimming, but its impact reached far beyond the water.

The teachers we remember most are not simply those who helped us understand a subject. They are the people who challenged our assumptions, recognised our potential and gave us confidence before we knew how to find it ourselves.

Sometimes education changes what we know. Sometimes it changes what we believe is possible.

Some teachers stay with us long after we leave their classroom.
Not simply because of what they taught, but because of what they helped us see in ourselves.
A teacher can challenge an idea, encourage curiosity, recognise potential or offer confidence at exactly the moment it is needed.
The lesson may end. The influence often does not.
Great teaching shapes more than what we know. It can help shape who we become.
