Please find our Lincoln Branch talk from Saturday the humorous Dr.Rory Waterman with his presentation on Lincolnshire Folktales. On MOA. It will be on there for one month!

The LFHS was represented at Eileen Robson's funeral yesterday by four current members. This lovely picture of Eileen was on the reverse of the service leaflet.

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of Eileen Robson on the 6th August. She was 100 years and 2 months old. Eileen was a founder member of this Society and was secretary for our first 15 years. She helped many many correspondents with their family history, particularly our overseas members. Her funeral will be held at Grantham Crematorium on the 11th September at 12.30. I do hope there will be one or two people in this group who will remember Eileen and will be able to join me at the funeral. She was such an integral part of the Society.

"Is someone able to explain what this entry means please. It’s from the Lincoln Quarter Sessions

Recognizances taken before James BRUCE and Thomas NETTLESHIP Esquires
on the 3rd October 1839

£100, £50, £50 George COOKE Charles BUCKNALL Booker AUCKLAND For the appearance of the said George COOKE at this Sessions to answer to the said Indictment preferred against him by the said Richard CHAPMAN for a felony. Discharged

Booker Auckland is one of my (indirect ancestors)"

This is a reference to a recognizance made at the Lincoln City Quarter Sessions. A recognizance is similar to a bail bond. The bondsman and his sureties are bound in a certain amount for the person who has to appear in court to actually appear, otherwise the money they are bound in has to be paid to the court. Again, this is similar to any bond where someone is bound in an amount of money to do a particular thing otherwise they lose the money they are bound in. The money is not paid up front.

In this case the person who has to appear is George COOKE for a felony. He is bound in £100. The other two mentioned, James BUCKNALL and Booker AUCKLAND are his sureties and are bound in £50 each. The recognizance has been discharged which means that George Cooke has appeared and the case dealt with.
