Behind the Brownie Badges: The Magic of Volunteering
(I meant to post this last week)
This week is Volunteers' Week (1–7 June), a time to celebrate the millions of people across the UK who give their time, skills and energy to support their communities. It feels like the perfect moment to share a little of what volunteering as a Brownie leader actually looks like because it's so much more than just Tuesday evenings.
What does a typical Brownie leader's weekend look like? Well, mine recently involved calculating exactly how many twigs and lengths of yarn would be needed to make 800 dream catchers, one of the craft activities I'm planning for Poacher 26. It also meant working out how to run a flour tower building challenge inside a church without causing a complete mess, sending out availability requests for our upcoming pack holiday, checking that all our leaders' qualifications are current, and having a chat with a potential new Brownie parent.
In short: it's a lot more than just showing up on a Tuesday.
Speaking of Tuesdays I arrived at Brownies this week tired after a full day at work, with a slight headache building. But the moment I walked through the door, all of that faded away. The girls were buzzing with excitement, smiley faces turned towards me, all eager to know what we were doing that evening. They could already see the badges lined up at the side of the room and knew they were completing their final civil engineering badge the last piece of the puzzle. That energy is infectious, and it's impossible not to be swept up in it.
It's moments like that which remind you exactly why you do it.
None of this would be as manageable without Anglian Water's volunteering policy which makes it so much easier to give this kind of time and commitment to the unit and as an added bonus, it means I get to spend time with friends and family, being completely and unapologetically goofy. Which, honestly, might be the best perk of all.
So this Volunteers' Week, if you've ever thought about giving your time to a group like Brownies, I couldn't recommend it more. Yes, it takes planning, preparation, and the occasional weekend spent counting twigs but the reward of seeing those smiling faces makes every moment worthwhile.
