My guest is Guy Olson from The Equity Release Partnership who talks about why he set up his business and the importance of understanding what it means.

Having worked in financial services and advising on equity release for about 20 years, with Aviva, and The Age Partnership, at a time when equity release was in its infancy, he eventually set up his own brokerage around two years ago.

Equity release is a growing market place, where many people have heard of it but don’t really understand how it works and how it can work for them. Guy spends a lot of time explaining to people what it actually means and the benefits.

Originally it was created to help people pay for care by giving them access to money that wouldn’t otherwise have been available. Then over the years, people have used equity release for other things, such as going on big holidays, paying for family weddings, or building extensions.

We talk about how now, with the larger number of elderly people in the population, the pressure on social services and on the provision of care is huge. In the past, and in many cultures families helped to provide care for their elders, but in the UK nowadays this isn’t so prevalent, and people are having to pay for their own care.

RUNNING A CARE HOME? WORKING IN CARE?

AgoraStaff is an innovative and disruptive online app-based recruitment platform catering for care providers looking to book temporary staff or to fill a last minute shift.

The app was created to provide an efficient cost effective way of connecting care providers with carers looking for shifts without high agency fees.

Carers join our platform for free and care providers pay a small monthly fee per location and five per cent of a shift - much cheaper than paying agency fees. Care providers get a three month trial where the monthly fee is waived.

We already know it saves care providers money per shift.

Currently we have more than 200 self-employed carers who are actively looking for work and we operate across Bristol, Bath and surrounding areas. However, with the ability to pay higher hourly rates, we are finding that some carers are willing to travel up to 100 miles to support care providers.

How does it work?

We cut out high agency fees.

On our platform care providers can book verified carers direct and we take a small fee from that transaction which means our care providers can save up to £40 per shift. This then enables them to pay a higher hourly rate to carers who are covering a shift - some care providers are paying up to £18 an hour and still saving money.

Two of our board members - the man who came up with the concept Richard Williams-Pears and business development director Janet Shreeve will run a webinar to explain the concept.
