CHURCH OF ENGLAND REDRESS SCHEME — TAKE YOUR TIME. ASK QUESTIONS.
As the launch of the Church of England Redress Scheme approaches, there is an increasing amount of information online about how victims and survivors can access the Scheme — including organisations offering to help manage the process.
The Scheme has been designed so that you can apply yourself. You do not need to instruct a solicitor, although you can choose to have independent legal advice and other support.
If you are considering asking a law firm, claims management company or another organisation to help you, it is entirely your choice.
But before agreeing to anything, ask questions.
• Will you charge me a fee?
• Will you take a percentage of any redress payment I receive?
• Are there any other charges I could become responsible for?
• What mental health or emotional support is available to me, and when can I access it?
• Who will have access to the personal information I share?
• What happens to my information when my application has finished? Could it be used to contact me about other services in the future?
• Are the people I will speak to trained to deal sensitively with difficult and potentially traumatic recollections?
• What experience do you have supporting victims and survivors of abuse?
Most importantly, do you feel comfortable and confident with the people offering to support you?
You should not feel pressured into making a decision there and then.
If you have entered into an agreement online or over the telephone, ask whether you have a cooling-off period, how you can cancel and whether any charges would become payable if you change your mind.
The Church of England has confirmed that applying to the Scheme will be free. You do not need a solicitor to apply and, for eligible applicants, funding of up to £5,000 is available for independent legal advice.
There are also charities and independent organisations that can provide confidential, impartial guidance and support.
You do not have to face these decisions alone.
Throughout October, Mental Health 360 will be publishing a series of straightforward guides explaining the Scheme, the choices available and some of the questions you may want to ask before deciding what is right for you.
Information to help you make your own informed decision — without pressure.
