Members of Hutton and Howick WI attended what they described as a fantastic and inspirational performance of “Sylvia” at the Lowry Theatre Manchester. The untold story of the rebellious middle child of Emmeline Pankhurst. Sylvia Pankhurst was fearless, flawed, and unforgettable. After they got the vote for women many suffragettes continued campaigning through the WI. Sounds like it was well worth the visit.

Last Thursday a group of 20 WI members visited Eco Town in Leyland to see a load of old rubbish! Kerry, our guide for the visit, began with this line that had us all chuckling. Kerry had a depth of knowledge and a real enthusiasm for the great work being carried out by Lancashire Renewables - the County’s waste collection service. Since April 2026, no household rubbish from across the county is going to landfill - a truly remarkable achievement and one that prevents methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, from polluting our atmosphere. Huge quantities of our rubbish is salvaged using magnets, lasers, star shaped sieving machines and hand sorting before being sent for recycling. The residual waste is sent to be incinerated and the heat is captured - household waste incineration heats 2m homes in the UK.  Lancashire Renewables has now started to process food waste and this will produce biogas to run the facility in Leyland in place of the current annual £2m energy bill. Compost is also produced from the food waste and is sold to farmers and horticulturalists across Lancashire. Our members agreed that this was an excellent and informative tour.

It’s great to hear that you found the tour of Ecotown inspirational and informative.

4 of our members were lucky enough to secure places on the tour of Ecotown arranged by LFWI. The tour was inspirational and highly informative - insight into how our refuse and recycling is managed in Lancashire. I think we all came away with ideas as to how we can do more as individuals.

On display at the recent LFWI Archive Event was this fabulous dress created by Aspull and Haigh WI for the NFWI’s 2011 Little Black Dress Competition. The competition was part of the NFWI’s Fast Fashion campaign which sought to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of fast fashion. Members were asked to re-create the iconic Little Black Dress in an eco-friendly manner. Using recycled garments, Aspull & Haigh WI designed a dress to suit every occasion - a garment that could be worn in both the boardroom and the ballroom! A basic shift dress was designed in a way that allowed the dress to evolve from one style to another by adding or removing interchangeable features such as sleeves and hemlines. The result was a versatile garment that provided a whole wardrobe of clothes in one dress! Following the competition at the Fashion & Textile Museum, London the dress was demonstrated at several WI meetings across the region.

Thirty members joined the Lifestyle team yesterday for a behind the scenes tour of the Bridgewater Hall exploring areas not usually seen by the public, including the Undercroft. The tour provided a fascinating insight into the innovative acoustic design of the building. With plenty of eateries close by, some members treated themselves to lunch at the Midland Hotel. With Bridgewater Hall celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, it's the perfect time to visit.
