The Lodge of Peace and Fraternity banner was paraded for the first time at the Provincial Grand Lodge of Sussex AGM earlier this month. The Lodge has been meeting in Peacehaven since its inception in 1984, but this is the first occasion that its banner has been displayed outside of the East Brighton Masonic Centre.
Appropriately, the banner depicts, supported by two columns, an annulet bearing the lodge name and number encircling a dove carrying a sprig of acacia in its beak flying above two hands, clasped, surmounted by the square and compasses.
The dove traditionally represents both peace and hope; acacia also has a special symbolic significance for Freemasons. The clasped, or conjoined hands depict friendship universal, and are emblematic of both peace and loyalty, and the square and compasses are the traditional tools associated with Freemasonry. The two columns represent the obelisk erected at Peacehaven to mark the Greenwich Meridian, where east meets west, and which bisects the town of Peacehaven.
