Our Statement in response to President Trump's comments:

The service and sacrifice of British personnel in Afghanistan cannot be called into question, and we condemn any comments that undermine their extraordinary contribution. 457 British personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan and thousands more and their families now live with the lifelong physical and mental impact from service in that conflict.

The dedication and sacrifices of the men and women in the British Armed Forces from the UK, Commonwealth, and beyond, to protect our freedoms and support our allies deserves our deep and ongoing respect and gratitude.

Our nation’s support for our Armed Forces is never in doubt. The Royal British Legion through our ongoing work to recognise, remember, and support the Armed Forces community, ensures that their unique contribution is not forgotten. This recognition is shared across communities, cultures, and faiths.

A new year can bring big feelings.

Hope, pressure, reflection, and it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed by it all.

For the Armed Forces community, it can also bring back memories of a different time.

The Royal British Legion are here to help in any way they can.

Poppy Appeal 2025
In advance of submitting our accounts on Friday, I'm able to confirm that the total amount raised for the RBL 2025 Poppy Appeal within Lewes, Kingston and Chailey currently stands at £28,355.63. This is a record amount of donations for the area.

As ever, my sincere thanks are due to the local shops and businesses in and around Lewes who have accepted tins and trays this year. Special mentions are due to Tesco, Waitrose and Aldi, who all allowed us to collect in-store for the 15 days of the appeal.

My thanks also to the volunteer Street Collectors, Army Cadets and Town Councillors who give their own time and effort to raise money for the cause, not forgetting those 'in the warm' on the stalls at the supermarkets.

If you think you might be able to spare a few hours to help out with this cause next October/November then please let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service yesterday.

Thanks to Anastasia and the team at Cooper & Son Funeral Directors for opening and serving coffee and delicious cakes. It was a great addition to the day and enjoyed by many. Thanks also to Roz Bassford for once again capturing the day for us.

Tomorrow is Armistice and there will be a small wreath laying ceremony and two-minute silence at the War Memorial at 11.00. If anyone wishes to join us, you'll be most welcome.

This means part of the High Street will be closed from 10.45 for 45 mins from the junction with Fisher Street to junction with Eastgate Street including St Nicholas Lane and Albion Street. Again, marshals will be on the barriers to assist you. If you are parked within the road closure area, you will not be able to move your vehicle until it is deemed safe to lift the road closure.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Please remember a road closure is in place today for Lewes’s Remembrance Parade and Service, from 2.15pm. The High Street will be closed from junction with St Annes Crescent to junction with Eastgate Street including Irelands Lane, Westgate Street, Station Street, St Nicholas Lane and Albion Street. Marshals will be positioned throughout the road closure and are there to assist you.

Please note: If you are parked within the closure zone you won’t be able to move your vehicle until the Parade and Service is finished and it is safe to open up the roads. This could be up to 4pm today.

Also, If you are in Lewes today, Annastasia, the new funeral director at Coopers is open for coffee on Sunday 9am to 5pm alongside her and Angela's display which includes Angela's dad, his uniform and also has a picture that includes Joe Pasquale who was in the same regiment and is remembered on the War Memorial.

Whatever you are doing today please take time to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Poppy Appeal 2025
The Poppy Appeal launches nationwide this Thursday, 23rd October, running for just over 2-weeks through to Tuesday 11th November.
Locally, our LDC Street Collecting permits are valid from this Saturday, 25th October, through to Saturday 8th November, during this time you will hopefully see some of the stalwart collectors out and about on the streets.
Our main delivery runs to the 200'ish local shops and businesses around Lewes, Kingston & Chailey will take place tomorrow.
We are again able to have a stall in both Tesco and Aldi and we will also have collectors in Waitrose - and, continuing from last year, all of the supermarket collectors will also be able to take contactless donations. Our presence in the supermarkets will be from 9am to 4pm from Saturday 25th October until Saturday 8th November.

If the supermarkets aren't convenient for you, then a full range of all the items we have will also be available at St Mary's Supporters Club between 7:30pm and 9:30pm every night of the appeal.
Finally, it's not too late to volunteer to assist this year, please drop us a message (or reply on here) if you are interested either for helping this year or in the years ahead.

86-year-old Army Veteran and RBL fundraiser, Michael Homer from Hampshire, visited Lewes this morning on his 'Station to Station' challenge, where he was greeted by our Branch Chairman Jack Neil (right) and Branch Member Dave Gander. Mr Homer's challenge, which started yesterday (20/10/25), is to visit 100 railway stations in seven days.

Mr Homer, who started raising funds for Royal British Legion 25 years ago said; "The RBL have helped me and many other veterans considerably. I've been a wheelchair user since 1990 making this journey more of a challenge. All of my routes have been planned out to the nearest minute but as with all transport systems things can go wrong!"

It’s the fifth challenge of this kind Mr Homer has taken on for the RBL in gratitude for their personal and national support.

Now that's impressive!

The brain child of Sheila at St. Mary's Supporters Club finally came to fruition on Saturday (18th October), when St Mary's Social Centre in Christie Road, Lewes was draped with nearly 2000 poppies.

The call went out earlier this year for poppies and the community responded. Thank you to everyone that supported the project:
• Cottage Pre-School
• Wallands Wanderers (Friends of Wallands)
• Lewes Guides (Girlguiding)
• Nevill Community
• Neville WI
• Wallands School
• LOS Musical Theatre
• St. Mary's Supporters Club
• St Mary's Social Centre
• Crafty Tuesdays.. and the many individuals who also supported the project.

Sheila said: "With the Poppy Appeal launching this week, if you like what we've created please give a donation to the Royal British Legion in a Lewes Poppy Box, over the next few weeks, in the lead up to Remembrance."

Well done everyone, it looks fantastic.

Did you know you don't have to have served in the Forces to become a member of the Royal British Legion?

Are you interested in finding our more about what we do, how we support the local veterans community and how you could help us?

Pop along to the Lewes Societies Fair this Saturday at Lewes Town Hall. Have a chat with some veterans and find out more about the RBL in Lewes. Doors open 10am-1pm.

As an added bonus, if you remember the Lewes floods in October 2000, there's also a free exhibition of flood memories, experiences and reflections... 25 years on.
