As the UK’s first street art charity, we’ve spent the last few years creating opportunities through public art, education and community engagement. With a growing programme of activity and a busy studio base in Lewes, we’re now looking for people who can help strengthen the organisation and support its future development.

Lewes District Council is supporting three exciting bids submitted from across the district to become the first UK Town of Culture.

The bids - representing Lewes, Newhaven and Seaford - showcase the remarkable creativity, heritage and community ambition flourishing throughout the district.

Councillor Johnny Denis, Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture, and Tourism & Leisure, said: “We are very excited to see three strong bids come forward from Lewes district. It shows the depth of cultural talent and the shared ambition we have across our communities. Each bid speaks to the unique character of its town and the strong sense of pride that runs through the district.”

The council has written to each bidding organisation to confirm its role as a supporting partner, wishing them well in the application process and reaffirming its commitment to championing cultural growth. The bids highlight a diverse range of cultural strengths across the district and set out opportunities for increased investment, greater community participation and stronger cultural identity.

The competition is being run by the government with the winner for 2028 to be announced this year. The successful town will receive £3 million to deliver a major cultural programme and two runners-up will receive £250,000 each. The competition aims to boost local pride across small, medium, and large towns.

Councillor Denis added: “We wish all three bidding groups from Lewes district the very best of luck, and we hope to see their hard work recognised when the shortlist is announced. These bids reflect everything that makes this district special and deserving of national recognition.”

Our Make Your Mark course kicked off last Saturday with Lewes young people exploring fashion, identity and design — from mood boards to wearable ideas — using the Cricut 💡👕🖤

This is about turning ideas into real things: graphics, garments, statements 💥
And we’re only just getting started 🚀

✨ Women who have never held a spray can… this is for you.
This Saturday, we still have space
for women who want to try real spray painting for the first time —
in a safe, welcoming, skill-building studio.

Here’s what our first group learned (in just one session):

🎨 How to fill smooth block colour (not patchy, not drippy — proper clean finish)
✂️ How to cut and design stencils — even if you’ve never drawn before
🌀 How pressure, posture and movement affect your spray finish
📏 How layering, masking and alignment work (the secret to mural-making)

And the best feedback?

“Can we come back next week?”

The studio is now beginning to feel like the vision —
a shared space where locals can experiment, build skills,
and grow creatively without pressure to ‘get it right’.

💗 “Spray It Forward” — Women’s Launch

We’re starting with women first — because representation matters.
Women make up over 70% of art graduates, yet less than 13% of street artists working publicly worldwide.

This Spray It Forward launch by U CAN Spray, the UK’s first street art charity based right here in Lewes, is about confidence, creativity, and community — giving women a safe space to pick up a can and make their mark.

We’re the team behind the Phoenix Underpass mural, as seen on ITV News, and we’re continuing to make our mark in Lewes — one wall, one artist, one spray at a time.
