Another successful Four Corners Workshop

A great time was had by all at our Four Corners Workshop. Visitors were able to have a go at spinning, weaving, dyeing and felting. Maybe you could join us next February!

Needlepoint Showcase

On 20th November we were treated to a talk by Bob Williams about his life-long hobby of needlepoint embroidery. Bob gave a fascinating insight into his life and background, instilled by his love of crafts and design. Luckily, he and his wife live locally so were able to bring a huge selection of his work for us to examine! We were all blown away by the designs and craftsmanship, and astounded that this represented only a sample of his works. Many thanks for sharing your work with us, Bob!

Harris Tweed

On the 6th November Elizabeth gave an interesting talk on Harris Tweed after her visit to the Outer Hebrides. She was able to visit one of the few mills still producing cloth, and also a visit to one of the handweavers in his workshop. She explained the traditional techniques used in Harris Tweed weaving, and bought along some samples she managed to pick up on her travels!

The Stevenage Knitting Company was set up in 1926, supplying mainly children's clothes and school wear until the Second World War, when the workers were re-engaged in war work and the factory site became a nursery. After the war Paul's father took over the business, mostly producing oiled wool products like fisherman's jumpers, ganzies and ski wear for Lillywhites and Harrods, and later Marks and Spencer....

On the 18th September Helen S took us through the delights of spinning without a spinning wheel, using various top and bottom drop spindles, supported spindles and Turkish spindles. Elizabeth explained and demonstrated the use of a book charkha to spin cotton fibres. It was a great opportunity to try out the techniques and play with different fibres!

We set up our Guild display for this year's Summer Wool Festival, Amptill on 26th and 27th July, and it proved more popular than ever! The weather was kind, which was great news for such a busy show. Our members demonstrated spinning, weaving and felting, answered questions, gave tips and swapped stories with our enthusiastic visitors. A show we all look forward to!
