How exciting that bestselling author Lee Child visited our wonderful local Hitchin Library! 📚✨

Our libraries have been brilliant supporters of our work to provide adults with free, confidential reading coaching, so it’s especially inspiring to see them celebrating their centenary with such a fantastic guest.

What a wonderful way to mark 100 years of the county’s library service - and to celebrate the National Year of Storytelling!

Here’s to our incredible librarians and authors who champion lifelong learning and help spread a love of reading ☺️📖

Thank you for joining us on International Book Giving Day to share the love of reading with more people!

We know that learning to read as an adult can be life-changing. Readers have told us that learning to read has given them new confidence, strengthened their connections to their communities, brought them new career opportunities, and enabled them to unlock the joy of reading.

Here at Read Easy we have bold ambitions to double the number of Readers we coach to 3,000 a year by 2029.

We're wrapping up National Storytelling week with Jeff's Read Easy success story.

Jeff moved to the UK from Dominica in the Caribbean when he was 10 years old. Although English was his first language, teaching in the UK was very different and he started to struggle.

"I found school difficult but I always tried my best. I had to try much harder than other kids – and go over things countless times and memorise them."

Jeff now works in a warehouse and cooks Caribbean one night a week as part of a delivery business. He began his Read Easy journey with his coach over Zoom.

"The most important thing for me is to be able to read stories to my son who has just started school. That’s my goal. I’d also like to be able to understand more in work, and have other options career-wise for the future. Reading will open those doors for me. If I have a chance of something better I’m going to take it."

💬 Know someone who is ready to start their reading journey? Get in touch with us at [email protected] or 07493 723781.

The second Read Easy success story we're sharing for National Storytelling week is Johnathan.

‘I went to one of the worst performing schools in the country, which has since been shut down. It was perfectly normal for teachers to swear at you and call you names, and for other children to bully you.'

Johnathan's neurodiversity was never recognised at school and he left without any qualifications. He began his journey with Read Easy over lockdown, his motivation being to help his children with homeschooling. A year later, Johnathan has a newfound love of novels and a confidence in himself.

"More than anything I want to know I have achieved something in life before my day comes and to show my kids that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Even my mother has noticed the change in me. She was smiling at me when I was reading something to her and I knew she felt proud.

I want to become something, to make an impact and to do the right thing – and I want to encourage other people like me to come forward and seek help too. Most importantly, I want to see the smiles on my children’s faces when I read to them. It’s such a massive achievement for me and nothing makes me happier".

As part of National Storytelling Week, we’d love to share some of the inspiring stories from our readers. 💛

Before starting her Read Easy journey (and becoming a black belt in Tae-kwon-do!), Jacky navigated school without knowing the alphabet, using a number of clever ‘reading hacks’.

"Jacky would focus all of her energy on listening in class and remembering what she heard or watching a film about the topic and absorbing enough detail to get by."

These strategies followed her into adulthood - until Jacky reached out to Read Easy, wanting to be able to read with her 7-year-old granddaughter.

"Since starting Read Easy sessions, I can now write some of the words for my shopping list every week after memorising it for years which I’m really pleased about. I would love to be able to get to the stage where I can go and volunteer in school reading with the children.’

Stories like Jacky’s remind us how powerful and life-changing learning to read can be - at any age. 📖✨
