As Volunteers’ Week 2026 (1–7 June) draws to a close, Shetland Heritage Association would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers across Shetland who work tirelessly to support the heritage sector. Without your dedication, many small museums, heritage centres, and heritage and history groups would not be able to continue. These groups are important to both locals and visitors, helping to promote learning, preserve lived experience, and support health and wellbeing. Thank you all.

The Vidlin P7s who attend the Lunnasting Primary School have been busy giving the Vidlin Playpark a make over. Kim Johnson organised the group to paint fences, benches, plant containers etc. They also planted flowers to hang around the fence and painted stones to brighten up the entry path. Lara went along to present the group with their Saltire Challenge Award. The Challenge Award is for a group of volunteers participating in a team event. Well done to everyone.

On our final day of sharing photos of the VAS team volunteering at Transition Turriefield the team digging up leeks / Kathleen and the Lodgepole pine tree planted during Volunteers Week 2022 / Lara and Trotsky enjoying a cuppa when we had finished. Thanks again Penny and Alan we had a brilliant morning volunteering with you.

Finally, on Day 5 of Volunteers Week we look at how Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV) can benefit the Organisation you are volunteering for/with.
BENEFITS TO THE Volunteer Involving Organisation (VIO)
Communities, charities, social enterprises and public sector bodies benefit from accessing increased time, expertise and support to deliver services and create lasting positive changes.

Reasons why you might benefit from hosting ESV volunteers include:
Engaging with new audiences:
Engaging employee volunteers can expose new people to your cause and ways to support your work.
Harnessing additional support:
Employee volunteers can provide extra support for service delivery, events and projects.
Accessing specialist skills:
By connecting with specific employers or people in particular job roles, volunteer-involving organisations can benefit from professional expertise (e.g. finance, legal, marketing, etc) that may otherwise be difficult or costly to access.
Increasing brand awareness:
Partnerships with employers can raise awareness of an organisation’s work among new audiences, including customers, staff networks and wider corporate contacts.
Establishing contacts for potential fundraising:
Building relationships through employee volunteering can create opportunities to connect with decision-makers, which over time can lead to discussions about sponsorship or in-kind support.

Voluntary Action Shetland can provide information and support to organisations to draw up an ESV policy and help teams and individuals find a suitable opportunity. If you are an organisation who might like to host ESV volunteers.

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY OF THE WEEK

LISTENING AND SUPPORT VOLUNTEER
CLAN CANCER SUPPORT SHETLAND

Your role as a Clan LISTENING & SUPPORT VOLUNTEER is essential in helping to provide our vital Listening and Support service to people affected by a cancer diagnosis (directly or indirectly) in your local community. The listening and support service offers a welcoming, relaxed, safe and confidential environment for people to talk about the cancer experience with someone who can listen and provide emotional and wellbeing support.

Training will be provided. We ask that volunteers give back one year of their time - at least one session per week (3-4 hours)

An interview will take place to make sure potential volunteers understand what is expected from them.
