Shetland Film Archive

Shetland Film Archive Scottish Charity number 42107 In August 2012 the group was awarded a grant of Β£25,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

We are a registered charity aiming to establish a film archive for Shetland that will collect, repair, preserve and digitise Shetland's film, allowing it to be enjoyed a variety of formats for years to come. The project group was set up to establish a film archive in Shetland, that will collect, clean, repair, preserve and digitise old film in a variety of formats including cine. Digitising alows

the film to be stored in a variety of formats with no loss of quality, meaning it can also be viewed and shared very flexibly. The project also aims to set up a database of films which will be accessible in museums and community facilities around Shetland, as well as being available on the internet. Once the delicate old films have been digitised, the original copies can be preserved and held safely in a specilised storage facility. This grant, along with sums raised from film screenings and a raffle, plus a matching sum from LEADER, is for Phase 1 of the Shetland Film Archive development project.

πŸŽ₯ This is an interesting recording of a traditional Shetland scene, which may date from the 1920s/1930s. The staging suggests that it might be a drama performance of some sort. It certainly seems quite theatrical! πŸ™‚πŸŽ

🎞 We are excited to share a newly digitised batch of films shot by the late Alister Smith, long-time owner of R.W. Bayes and keen Shetland film-maker. These films offer a fascinating glimpse into Shetland life in the 1970s / 1980s - look out for a second batch coming very soon! With grateful thanks to Tesco Stronger Starts for funding this digitisation project πŸ˜€πŸŽ₯
