***EGM - Centre at Risk of CLOSURE***

Sandveien Neighbourhood Centre is looking for new committee members to help ensure the facility remains open for the community as an asset in the south end of Lerwick. The centre is returning to normal after a challenging year and a half, with various groups using the Centre 7 days a week, making it one of the best used community venues in Shetland. At this time the present office bearers are in their 70's and looking to step down after a long number of years service. Over the last six years, the committee have spent sizeable sums of money on insulation, new heaters, and every light in the building is now LED, in order to reduce running costs, making the centre more sustainable in the long term. The present finances are very healthy, so any new volunteers/office bearers do not need to worry about spending their time on fund raising.

The centre is also in the fortunate position to be able to apply to the Shetland Islands Council Youth Facilities grant aid scheme, which is designed to assist committees to manage and/or maintain youth facilities with their annual running costs. The Sandveien Neighbourhood Centre was opened in 1996.

The EGM will be held at the centre on Thursday 20 January at 7pm, if no volunteers come forward the building will be at risk of closure from Monday 24 January, with all existing bookings unable to be supported!

The venue comprises of a gym hall, meeting rooms, outside multi court, tuck shop plus storage rooms and toilets. It is used as a youth club twice a week and by a range of various local voluntary groups for their meetings and activities. It is also available for one-off events such as birthday parties, car-boot sales etc.

For further information or to express your interest in supporting the centre please contact Ian Burke via [email protected].

The outgoing committee look forward to welcoming supporters to the EGM.
