Angling Trust

Angling Trust We are a not for profit organisation, representing anglers, fighting for fish, fishing and the environment.

Protect | Promote | Develop

We are recognised by the Government as the National Governing Body for angling in England. We are also a partner with Visit Wales and NRW to promote Fishing in Wales. We are a member-based organisation made up of anglers of all disciplines providing a united front to represent, grow and protect our sport. We work to get more people fishing more often and to promote the

benefits of the sport. We lobby and fight to protect fish and fishing in both freshwater and the sea and we organise and run more competitions across coarse, game and sea than any other body. You can visit our web site at www.anglingtrust.net

Protected sharks, skates and rays are being caught at a scale of more than 120 tonnes a year, while endangered Atlantic salmon are also being intercepted at sea when every fish matters.

The report highlights the scale of the problem, with evidence suggesting one salmon is caught for every 1.25km of coastal gillnet.

Mark Owen, Head of Fisheries at the Angling Trust, comments: “We are now starting to uncover the true impact that commercial fishing is having on our Atlantic salmon stocks at sea, a fish that has been recently designated as ‘endangered’ by the IUCN. Salmon angling is heavily regulated in the UK and it is time that the enforcement agencies acted on the commercial sector to save a species threatened with extinction.”

Hannah Rudd, Head of Marine at the Angling Trust added: "Millions of fish are caught unintentionally every year, including vulnerable species that are highly valued by recreational sea anglers. Bass bycatch provisions are being used in ways that risk undermining their original purpose, while species such as tope and smoothhound are regularly caught and discarded. The government must take meaningful action to reduce bycatch, strengthen monitoring and put ecosystem-based management at the heart of decision-making."

🌿 Invasive Species Week returns from 22–28 June 🌿

This annual campaign brings together organisations, communities and individuals across the UK to raise awareness of invasive non-native species and the simple actions we can all take to help stop their spread.

Led by the GB Non-native Species Secretariat (NNSS) and supported by partners including the Angling Trust and Environment Agency, the campaign highlights the impact invasive species can have on our waterways, native wildlife, environment and economy.

💧 How can you help?

✔️ Check, Clean, Dry your equipment
✔️ Be Plant Wise
✔️ Report sightings of invasive species

In 2025, 174 organisations took part and 78 events were held across the UK and Crown Dependencies. Together, we can continue to make a difference and help protect our waters for future generations.

60,000 water quality tests. One every 35 minutes for four years straight.

That’s the incredible milestone reached by the Water Quality Monitoring Network, powered by more than 800 dedicated volunteers across the country.

Their data is helping reveal the true extent of river pollution. In 2024/25, 41% of samples breached good ecological status for phosphate, while 50% showed signs of nitrate pollution.

But once pollution is revealed, it can be challenged. Local groups and the Angling Trust campaigns team use this evidence to push Government, regulators and water companies to take action.

The new season of The Last Salmon podcast is here.

Presented by Angling Trust Ambassador Jim Murray MBE, episode one brings together Angling Trust Ambassador Marina Gibson Fishing, TV fishing legend Matt Hayes and renowned salmon campaigner Vala Arnadottir for a powerful conversation on the future of wild salmon.

Together, they explore what the UK, Norway and Iceland are getting right and wrong when it comes to salmon conservation, covering everything from fish handling and catch and release to aquaculture, pollution, spawning habitat and public awareness.

Wild salmon are one of the world’s most extraordinary migratory species, but they are under serious threat. This episode asks what more needs to be done, and why the fight to save them must reach far beyond angling.
