🚶RAFWARMA Road Marching 🏅

Last weekend, FS Paul participated in a demanding 80km road march at RAF Cosford, joining approximately 700 other marchers.

This challenging two-day event tested mental resilience and required strong encouragement and morale - something FS Paul is well known for, recognised with the “Best Motivator” paper plate award 😅

She was also presented with more formal awards, including the RAFWARMA medal and silver road marching badge. Next up: Nijmegen Marches later this year! 💪🏻

🏕️Blue Fieldcraft Weekend Course ⛺️

This weekend, three Leiston cadets successfully completed the blue fieldcraft course, a vital part of their training. Cadets tackled key skills from the syllabus: shelter building, camouflage, observation, and basic navigation. The focus was on practical experience in a realistic setting, enhancing teamwork and problem-solving.

Participants showed impressive dedication, mastering essential fieldcraft techniques that build self-reliance and leadership. This course equips our cadets with skills for future challenges, fostering a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and their next levels of progressive training. 🚂The Long Shop Museum’s 2026 Steam Up🚂

On Sunday 19 April our two Mayor’s Cadets (For Leiston and Aldeburgh) joined their respective Mayors at the Long Shop Museum’s Opening Steam Up Exhibition 2026.

They were joined by Wing Sector Commander Sqn Ldr Stuart Smith, as well as our friends from the RBL Band Leiston. Both Mayors Cadets also had the opportunity to meet our local MP, Jenny Riddell-Carpenter MP !

An excellent display of local history in the heart of Leiston, based around steam power and the Garrets Works, and an important event of public engagement for our two Mayor’s Cadets nearly half way through their civic years! TJ Haworth-Culf Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council

✈️Flying with 7AEF RAF Cranwell✈️

Four cadets from 1379 (Leiston) Squadron visited RAF Cranwell Air Experience Flight for training in the RAF’s Grob Tutor, 2 cadets were first time flyers and received their certificates marking this milestone in their cadet careers.

Flying is the highlight and unique selling point of the RAF Air Cadets, and is in all a great privilege. Cadets have a dedicated session with their pilots to discuss, experience, and deepen their understanding of aviation and aircraft handling. All cadets had full sorties with 7AEF, and all opted to undertake aerobatics - an opportunity truly unlike any other!

Cadets also observed training sorties of the RAF’s Prefect and Phenom.

We were also pleased to be joined by friends from whose four cadets also had full sorties - all first time flyers with RAFAC!

With special thanks to all staff at 7AEF.

🤝Squadron Command Handover Ceremony🤝

On Monday 16 March, following his promotion to Wing Sector Commander, Squadron Leader Stuart Smith handed command over to Flying Officer William Mayhew (formerly Squadron Adjutant).

Both were pleased to be joined by Wing Commander David Miller, Senior Staff Officer for Central and East Region, and Wing Commander Jason Allen, Officer Commanding Norfolk and Suffolk Wing, together with neighbouring Squadron OCs, local Mayors, friends and supporters of the Squadron.

Under Sqn Ldr Smith, 1379 (Leiston) Squadron has undergone a complete transformation; from 5 to 40 cadets, self-dependency across all activities in the progressive training syllabus, and governance and finance. This is in large part down to the vision and leadership of Sqn Ldr Smith, who takes this experience and vision to sector level, working with OCs in Beccels, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth.

Fg Off Mayhew’s service at 1379 Squadron started 11 years ago as a cadet, and he has bee on Squadron during this transformation. In his speech, he reflected on the pride to take over a vastly different Squadron, one recognised as rge Most Improved in the RAFAC (Marshall Trophy 2025) and committing to pushing ahead with ambitions for the Lees Trophy in the near future.

We also took the opportunity to award two Commandant Air Cadets’ commendations to CWC Viv Marshall and the whole Civilian Welfare Committee for their work over this period of command, a certificate of appointment for CWO Aryaeenia, a silver music badge to FS Tye, and the newly donated trophy by Sqn Ldr Smith for dedication to the RAFAC offer, Cpl Kemp.

On behalf of all cadets, CFAV, Civilian Welfare Committee, we reiterate the thanks and appreciation we have for Sqn Ldr Smith, and wish Fg Off Mayhew the very best of luck in his new role.
