Thursday 21 May - A tour of the village focused on pre-Norman features as part of the Herfordshire Histories Festival.

Thursday 21 May at 11.00, about 2 hours. Meet at the History Room.

Using recent research, evidence from past excavations, physical features of the village, church and surrounding fields Terry Pearson will explain how he believes the village was used. The tour will look at some evidence of remains in the History Room, the village and at the Church. Terry will explain recent findings and summarise how he is developing his understanding of the early settlement history of the village.

Tour numbers are limited so contact Jonathan Hopkinson at [email protected] beforehand.

The Society enjoyed an excellent talk by Penny Platts on the history of cider last Wednesday. In association with this our webmaster (mistress?) has produced this excellent piece on cider tithes in Leintwardine.

On Wednesday evening members enjoyed a talk by Penny Platts on the History of Cider. She referred to Leintwardine in the 1790s where recently transcribed original ledgers from that time show that t…

LHS' own Nicola Kearton will be giving a talk in Aymestrey Church on 22nd May 2026 at 2pm on a subject close to her heart, and on which she has becoming an undisputed expert!

The talk is titled "Landscape, Architecture & Memory - The Art of Elizabeth Jane Woodhouse Lewis (1813-1874)". Nicola has already had well-received articles published on the subject in the Woolhope Transactions 2024 (published late 2025) and in Ludlow Heritage News (Spring 2026), published by the Ludlow Civic Society.

Put the date in your diary now!

Today (25th March) is New Year's Day - at least, it was until 1752. Today is in fact Lady Day, the Feast of the Annunciation, one of the four traditional "quarter days" which governed the lives of Leintwardine folk for centuries, but until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1752 it was also New Year's Day. It was only after that change that we adopted 1st January as the start of the calendar year.

For more on the significance of Lady Day historically, and it's role in the lives of villagers past and present, visit our web page at https://leintwardinehs.wordpress.com/
