At Spectrum, inclusion is built into every session we run 💜

Recently, while running our Mamma Mia! summer club with North Bucks Down Syndrome Support Group, we used Widgit symbols to help participants learn lyrics and support their acting.

Widgit Software symbols are such a valuable tool for making activities more accessible and helping everyone understand, communicate and take part in their own way.

As a proud Widgit Software Symbol-Friendly Organisation (SFO), we use Widgit symbols across our Spectrum sessions to help make communication clearer, more accessible and more inclusive for all our participants.

Because everyone deserves the chance to express themselves, be creative and feel part of the magic.💜✨

This week I officially started the research part of my Arts Council England Research and Development Grant by visiting Spectrum Community Arts and Keybeats Sensory Story Exploration Workshop of Tiddler at The Forest Centre in Marston Moretaine. Jade, Sarah and the team were so welcoming and I loved watching how they put all the sensory elements together and it was reassuring to see that some of the props they used are what is in my kit for the ‘Beyond the Stars’ session. I had intended to sit back and watch but when the chance came up to wear a colourful fish hat, join a mermaid party and help Tiddler escape a fishing net I felt compelled to join in. If you have a child/young person with complex SEND or PMLD I highly recommend going along to one of their summer workshops and if you are local to their area to try one of their classes. Next week they are running workshops with a jungle theme and I believe there are spaces for some workshops still available but they are filling up. Thank you Jade and Sarah for being so welcoming and sharing your expertise with me and I look forward to welcoming you all to one of our sessions in 2027.

💜 A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE HARE! 🎉

We are absolutely thrilled to share that The Hare Linslade raised an incredible £1,460 for Spectrum Community Arts as part of their amazing HareFest weekend! 🥳

A massive thank you to everyone who voted for Spectrum to be one of the chosen charities. The weekend raised a fantastic £2,920 in total, which is being split between Spectrum and Leighton Buzzard Mencap.

And thank you to everyone at The Hare, all the performers, vendors, organisers and everyone who came along, bought tickets, donated and helped make the weekend such a brilliant celebration of our local community.

We are so grateful to The Hare for choosing to support Spectrum and for raising such an incredible amount to help us continue providing accessible performing arts opportunities for people with disabilities and additional needs.

It's an amazing pub with such a great atmosphere - check them out!
