Our litter pickers do get some compensation when going around the park and this was the case for Penny Jones who found herself near to the resident swans and their brood today.
It may be a bit hard to count them all in the photo but I am informed thar there are six cygnets that are following their parents closely.

Whilst the cygnets are small and they take a long time to fledge to fly the parents will be very protective of them. This means that they will chase off dogs or anything that threatens the cygnets. So it is particularly important to keep dogs under control around the lake. Swans are more than capable of drowning dogs. Also failing to control your dog that attacks swans is a criminal offence.

So enjoy the spectacle but from a distance.

It is going to be hot this weekend and it is half term. So lots of fun to be had. But don't let the enjoyment turn to tragedy.

Tiddenfoot Lake is not suitable for swimming and you should not swim in it. The water is quite shallow at the water's edge but quickly drops away to great depths. That coupled with a lot of submerged weeds branches and other things to entangle swimmers makes it very dangerous. And also just consider that the catfish sculpture on the north shore is LIFE SIZE.

The other thing to be concerned about is the regular supply of the idiotic/inconsiderate depending on your tolerance who decide that it is a great place to have a barbeque. Definitely not! In addition to the litter that inevitably results, the charcoal in a tin barbeques are a great safety and fire risk. If you want a barbeque enjoy it at home.

This post from is about a swan needing help because of being hooked up in fishing gear on a lake in Leighton Buzzard yesterday. There are not many lakes in LB with swans resident and carp fishing going on. Alarmingly this is the second time that he has had to be rescued from fishing gear this year.

Thankfully the cob is now free and has resumed feeding and looking after his mate on the nest.

But a reminder that should not be needed to be careful of fishing gear and to ensure that broken gear is removed properly.

Today we revisted what is now known as Lilly's Glade in the South East corner of the park where 5 months ago we were clearing a lot of undergrowth. It is now changing to have a lot more flowers.
We installed a rustic bench of two tree trunks and a board with a great vista over the meadow below. This has now become Lilly's bench and you can see her enjoying it with Team Spaniel Ava.

We were greatly aided today by the assistance of a great party of volunteers from Grundfos on Grovebury Road who made short work of the hole digging. A bit of physical effort on a sunny day has to beat answering all those emails any day. Sadly I failed to get any photos of those heroes.

Additionally some overhanging branches over paths were trimmed

The swans are nesting again which is always precious. One will sit on the nest incubating the eggs while the other feeds. The nest is in the NW corner of the lake amongst the trees. in a conservation area.
The eggs will likely be several weeks till they hatch.
They will be quite vulnerable for a while and the adults will be very protective. That is why it is very important to stop dogs running amok and disturbing them.

In recent days our litter pickers have noticed that there seems to be a lot more chewed trees and stick than before and too much for squirrels which are the usual culprits.

With Samba having escaped from Marwell Zoo a fortnight ago the speculation is rife that she has made it along waterways to a better location at Tiddenfoot. Although Capybara would be an invasive species who could say that a population of these dear rodents would not be an asset to the park and they would probably find it very congenial. Mind you they would probably see off smaller troublesome dogs. Ecologist Avril Poisson of the Institute of Studies says, "Capybara would find a lake such as Tiddenfoot an ideal environment with its range of habitats and access to other rivers and canals nearby. They have particular habits though so you are unlikely to see one in the wild after noon."

So get down to Tiddenfoot and see if you can spot Samba, or is it another?
