Training Ship Ocean is the Leighton Buzzard unit of the Sea Cadet Corps. The unit also has a Royal Marines Cadets Detachment.

Our Junior Section accepts cadets from age 10.

This week we were delighted to welcome back a former Cadet and CFAV who left us in 2020 to pursue his dream career in the Royal Navy. Now a Petty Officer, Kieran told us all about his role in 814 Naval Air Squadron, “The Flying Tigers” and some cool facts about the Merlin helicopter.

If you have an ambition, even if there are setbacks, don’t give up on it. You can make it happen !

We’re proud to share that earlier this week Civilian Instructor Paul received a Meritorious Service Award along with other Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.
Paul has been an instructor with Sea Cadets for very many years, latterly here at Leighton Buzzard, specialising in waterborne activities such as sailing and power boating, and is a strong advocate of offshore voyages.
Congratulations Paul and thank you for everything you bring to the Sea Cadet experience !

With Trafalgar Parade and Remembrance events approaching in the annual calendar, the Ship’s Company was out on the parade square this week getting the steps in !
With some experienced cadets and others less so, it was great to see them all working as a team and progressing together 👍

It’s been great having 7 cadets on board over this weekend to complete their Basic Engineering Specialisation !
They have worked through several modules of both mechanical and electrical engineering based at the unit, including getting hands-on with the engine and learning about different tools and techniques.
Today we all had the opportunity to see some real engineering during a visit to Siemens Mobility Limited’s Kings Heath Traincare Facility in Northampton where the cadets worked out how the doors and some of their safety systems operate, then tried their hand at some of the maintenance checks on the wheels and brakes.
It was exam time after returning to the unit and everybody passed, yay 🎉 !! Congratulations, brilliant team working together for the weekend 💪.

Our Royal Marines Cadets Detachment is fresh back from X-Ray Company Summer Camp. For most, this was their first experience of operating as a section in the field and sleeping out on the training area in a bivvi !

Our home in Leighton Buzzard has recently had something of a makeover both inside and out with the Main Deck space sporting a new coat of paint and the once rather lacklustre outdoor area now a mature looking garden 🌴.
Today our District Officer attended the official opening along with cadet representatives of our Sea Cadet Division and Royal Marines Cadets Detachment, Bravo Zulu ! 👏

Fantastic performances from Eastern Area cadets at the inaugural Cadet Small Bore R***e Meeting, including Marine Cadet Teresa from our very own Royal Marines Cadets Detachment here at Leighton Buzzard ! 👏
After being introduced to target shooting through an air r***e programme at the unit, MC Teresa has successfully transferred her skills to the .22 r***e and represented Sea Cadets at national level, what a hoofing performance 💪 !

Good luck to Marine Cadet Teresa from our Detachment and the rest of the Eastern Area shooting team who are competing in the inaugural Cadet Small Bore R***e Meeting !
After two days of training on the ranges, the team today begins three days of competition alongside their counterparts from all three cadet services.

Cadets are taught r***e handling skills and undertake range target shooting as part of a structured programme of supervised training that emphasises safe and responsible use.

Our Junior Cadets were tenting around this week, needing team power to pitch one of our 4-person tents which went up in a flash. What was more impressive was how they got it back in the bag first time 💪. Some of their own tent designs were brilliantly imaginative !
Our Navy section were getting to grips with piping and the Boatswain’s Call.
The Marine Detachment continue their summer camp preparation with some kit checks followed by a grid references refresher from the Royal Marines Cadets map 🗺️ reading syllabus. They were all over it !
