The Baldwin Trust

The Baldwin Trust Extending our aims still further, we are also pleased to arrange trips for small or family groups with a deserving family member.

The Baldwin Trust is a charitable organisation staffed by volunteers who offer adapted/wheelchair friendly narrowboat cruises on Leicestershire waterways for community or family groups. The Baldwin Trust was originally formed to help the patients of the Baldwin Ward at Leicester Frith Hospital by the provision of a narrow boat for day outings or longer holidays. This aim is now extended to include

elderly, infirm and other groups of people, some in care homes, to support wellbeing and to whom a day spent in the tranquil waterway environment is especially beneficial. Our narrowboats are designed to be very "user friendly". Both are fitted with ramps and electrically operated lifts to make boarding as easy as possible and passengers in wheel chairs are most welcome. The Trust is a charitable organisation, staffed by volunteers who offer waterway outings on the River Soar and Grand Union Canal for community or family groups within Leicestershire. The cruises offered are generally from 4 hour to 7 hour duration. We can also offer shorter or longer outings by prior arrangement.

The recently established Rothley Community Centre opened its doors on Sunday for the public to view its facilities; the Baldwin Trust attended the event to talk to visitors about the important work the Trust does for many people in the local community.

A number of volunteers with The Baldwin Trust live in Rothley and our crew often incorporate the history of Rothley and the surrounding area during our trips which pass by Rothley Brook .

Peter, one of our experienced skippers, was on hand to talk to people and to provide leaflets relating to our trips, generating lots of enquiries, including many from groups supporting people living with disabilities.

Thank you to The Rothley Centre Group for putting on such a great community event.

⚓SPECIAL OFFER!!⚓

BOOK A 4 HOUR CRUISE ON DANDELION IN JULY AND AUGUST FOR ONLY £150!

This is a saving of over 10% on the normal trip price and is the total price for up to 12 passengers – brilliant value of £12.50 per passenger for a four hour cruise!

(offer limited to 4 hour cruises on Dandelion taken in July and August only).

Dandelion is the older of the two boats in the Trust; launched in 1988 and initially used as a stay aboard boat by Leicestershire County Council for children’s holidays, Dandelion came to the Trust in 2002 for the sum of £1! Dandelion was fully refurbished to meet the Trust’s high standards of accessibility and began giving day trips soon after this work was completed. In the 20 plus years since, Dandelion has given thousands of deserving people much needed time on the water, getting away from daily challenges, connecting with others and learning something about the beautiful Charnwood area and nature along the way. During the most recent closed season, Dandelion underwent significant maintenance, including a full lift out of the water for hull inspection and re-paint, engine realignment, electrical upgrade and more; our maintenance volunteers have done a tremendous job to ensure Dandelion is fit for use for many years to come.
To celebrate this piece of local history, and to make sure Dandelion is enjoyed by as many people as possible this season, the Baldwin Trust are offering a 4 hour trip in July and August for £150.

The Baldwin boats are operated by a team of almost 90 volunteers, many of whom live in Barrow and the surrounding villages – so please give them a wave when you next see them on the water!
