Period conversations often start at home but too often, they don't happen at all.

Many parents and carers want to talk to their children about periods, but don't know where to start. They worry about saying the wrong thing, using the wrong words, or making their child feel embarrassed.

The result? Silence. And that silence becomes shame.

At Bear Earth CIC, we believe families shouldn't have to navigate these conversations alone. Our educational resources โ€“ like "Shine" and "Flow" โ€“ are designed to support parents, carers and young people with clear, age-appropriate language that makes periods normal, not taboo.

When families can talk openly about periods, young people grow up feeling prepared, confident and supported โ€“ not confused or ashamed.

If you're a parent, carer or family support worker looking for resources to start that conversation, we're here to help.

Period Poverty and School Attendance
Missing one day a month doesn't sound like much. But it adds up.

Over a school year, that's around 12 days of missed lessons, assessments and opportunities. Over five years of secondary school, it's nearly two full months of education lost, simply because a young person can't access safe menstrual products or manage their period with dignity.

Period poverty directly impacts educational outcomes, and the gap only widens over time.

At Bear Earth CIC, we work with schools to make sure no student has to choose between their education and their basic needs. From providing dignity kits to delivering period education that builds confidence, we're helping young people stay in school and stay focused on their futures.

If your school is seeing attendance issues linked to periods, let's talk about how we can help.

Period poverty costs more than money.

It costs education โ€“ days of school missed add up to gaps in learning that never get filled.

It costs careers โ€“ missing work or interviews because you can't manage your period safely and confidently.

It costs mental health โ€“ the constant stress, shame and anxiety of not having what you need.

And it costs freedom โ€“ the inability to plan your life around something as basic as your menstrual cycle.

At Bear Earth CIC, we see these costs every day in the communities we work with. That's why our approach goes beyond handing out products โ€“ we provide education, support and long-term partnerships that address the real, lasting impact of period poverty.

Because everyone deserves to live without these hidden costs.

"We'll talk about periods when they're older."
"They don't need to know yet."
"It's too awkward."

We hear these phrases all the time โ€“ and we understand the hesitation. But delaying period education doesn't protect young people. It leaves them confused, unprepared and often ashamed when their body does something completely natural.

At Bear Earth CIC, we believe period education should start early, be age-appropriate, and include everyone โ€“ not just girls. When boys understand what periods are, stigma loses its power. When young people learn about their bodies before puberty starts, they feel confident, not caught off guard.

If your school or youth organisation would like support delivering honest, stigma-free period education, we're here to help.

We're proud to share this work from our partners in Ghana, who recently delivered sanitary products to women and girls in their community.

This is what collaboration looks like, local organisations understanding local needs and taking direct action to ensure no one is left behind because they can't afford basic menstrual products.

At Bear Earth CIC, we believe period poverty is a global issue that requires local solutions. The principle is the same: every woman and girl deserves dignity, safety and the freedom to manage her period without shame or struggle.

Thank you to our partners in Ghana for their incredible work. Together, we're building a world where period poverty has no place.

The new year is full of resolutions, but period poverty doesn't wait for good intentions.

Right now, right now across the world women and girls are starting 2026 with the same struggles they faced in 2025: missing school or work, using unsafe alternatives, and feeling invisible because their basic needs aren't being met.

At Bear Earth CIC, we're not waiting. We're already back to work, delivering dignity kits, running education sessions, and partnering with communities to create real, lasting change.

If your school, workplace or community organisation wants to be part of the solution this year, let's talk.

A new year is starting, but period poverty hasn't gone anywhere.

Right now, across the UK, Sri Lanka, Nepal and beyond, women and girls are waking up to the same impossible choices: missing school or work, using unsafe alternatives, or staying silent about a basic human need.

At Bear Earth CIC, 2026 means continuing the work we've started, providing dignity kits, delivering education, and partnering with communities to create lasting change.

If your organisation, school, workplace or community group wants to join us in making periods safer, more dignified and stigma-free, we'd love to hear from you.

Let's make this the year more people understand that dignity isn't optional.

Christmas is a time when many of us gather with loved ones, rest, and reflect on the year weโ€™ve had.

At Bear Earth CIC, weโ€™re especially grateful for everyone who has stood with us in 2025, from schools and community groups to partners, donors and volunteers.

Together, weโ€™ve taken more steps towards a world where no one is held back by period poverty or silenced by stigma around menstruation.

As we head into a new year, our wish is simple: that every woman and girl can manage her period with dignity, confidence and support.

From all of us at Bear Earth CIC, we wish you a peaceful Christmas and a hopeful New Year.

For many young people, the first period doesnโ€™t come with a calm explanation โ€“ it arrives with panic, confusion, or silence.

No child should feel afraid of their own body. A simple conversation, the right words at the right time, can turn fear into understanding and shame into confidence.

At Bear Earth CIC, we create resources and sessions that help parents, carers, schools and youth workers talk openly about first periods in a way that is kind, clear and ageโ€‘appropriate.

If you support young people and want help starting that conversation, weโ€™d be glad to support you.
