LEICESTER LOCAL NEWS: LEICESTERSHIRE MP SAYS NO TO CITY EXPANSION

Mid Leicestershire MP Peter Bedford has publicly opposed any plans to expand Leicester’s boundaries into surrounding county villages.

Speaking during a Westminster Hall debate on local government reorganisation, the MP said it would be “wholly unacceptable” for villages to be placed within an enlarged Leicester City Council “against their will”.

In a statement shared online, Bedford said he would continue to fight “tooth and nail” against any proposals that could see county areas absorbed into the city.

The comments come amid ongoing discussions around local government reform and the future structure of councils across Leicestershire.

The issue has already sparked debate among residents, with some arguing closer integration could improve services and investment, while others fear villages could lose their identity and local representation.

What do you think?

Should Leicester expand its boundaries — or should surrounding towns and villages remain separate from the city? 👇
