Congratulations to Adam Squires, this year's recipient of the Lynn Hancock Volunteer of the Year Award. 🏆

Since joining Warning Zone in September 2023, Adam has guided an incredible 178 sessions, helping around 1,250 children learn vital safety lessons.

But numbers only tell part of the story.

Adam is always willing to step in when we're short of volunteers, support new recruits and share his experience with others.

One story shared at the awards evening perfectly sums up why Adam was chosen.

A new volunteer was feeling disappointed after their first experience of guiding. Adam took the time to point out what they had done well and helped rebuild their confidence. That simple act of encouragement completely changed how they felt.

The phrase shared during the evening was:

"We should all be a little more Adam." ❤️

Thank you Adam for everything you do for Warning Zone and the children we support.

Last night we had the privilege of celebrating some very special people.

Our annual Volunteer Awards Evening gave us the opportunity to recognise the dedication, commitment and passion of the volunteers who help make Warning Zone possible.

Our volunteers give their time, energy and experience to help thousands of children learn how to recognise risks, make safer choices and stay safe as they become more independent.

It has been a year of change for Warning Zone, but through every challenge our volunteers have remained at the heart of everything we do. Their support, commitment and positivity have helped us continue reaching young people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

A huge congratulations to all of our award recipients and thank you to every volunteer who gives their time to support our work.

You are the heart and soul of Warning Zone. 💛

The recent spell of hot weather has brought a stark reminder of why water safety matters.

Across the UK, reports suggest that at least 15 to 17 people have lost their lives in water-related incidents during the recent heatwave, including a number of children and young people.

Many of these tragedies happened in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and other inland waterways that can appear safe and inviting on a warm day.

But open water can be unpredictable.

Cold water shock, hidden currents, sudden drops in depth and submerged hazards can all pose serious risks - even to confident swimmers.

At Warning Zone, water safety is one of the vital life skills we teach to help children recognise risks and make safer choices. By helping young people understand the dangers, we can give them the knowledge and confidence to stay safe around water.

As the warmer weather continues and summer approaches, take a few minutes to have a conversation with the children and young people in your life about staying safe near water.

It could make all the difference.

💙 Stay safe. Respect the water.

This , we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible people who make Warning Zone what it is.

Every year, thousands of children visit Warning Zone to learn how to recognise risks, make safer choices and navigate the challenges they may face both offline and online.

But those life-saving lessons don't happen by accident.

They happen because of our amazing volunteers.

Our volunteers guide children through realistic scenarios, encourage discussion, answer questions and help bring important safety messages to life.

Whether they're helping children understand road safety, online safety, water safety, fire safety or personal safety, their impact can last a lifetime.

Quite simply, we couldn't do what we do without them.

To every member of our volunteer team - thank you for the time, care and energy you give to young people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

You make a difference every single day.

Another serious local fire has led to a warning from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service after a person suffered burns and smoke inhalation in a house fire in Leicester this weekend.

The cause is believed to have been an e-bike left charging overnight in a corridor.

Fire crews highlighted just how dangerous lithium-ion batteries can become when overcharged, damaged, or used with the wrong charger - especially when charging near escape routes inside the home.

One incredibly important detail from this incident:
A closed internal door stopped the fire spreading further through the house.

At Warning Zone we teach Year 6 children about real-life risks exactly like this. Many young people see e-scooters and e-bikes as harmless everyday items, but incidents like this show how quickly things can turn serious.

Our sessions help children understand:

* Why e-scooters are illegal to use on public roads outside approved trials
* The dangers of charging lithium battery devices indoors or overnight
* Why escape routes must be kept clear
* How small safety habits - like shutting doors at night - can save lives

Safety education matters because these aren’t rare stories anymore.
They’re happening in our communities.
