For session two of our movie-making workshops, courtesy of volunteer Dylan, our Inspire group learned about sound-design.

Dylan taught our young people how to produce different sound-effects using various objects. The group then took to movie-making programs, recording and adding their own sound effects to a series of short videos.

Today we were joined by Freedom for Girls, who held a session with our Facing the Future group about period-poverty and the menstrual cycle.

The group discussed what period-poverty is, and how social stigma and the cost of living can limit access to period-products and support. They also explored how tracking menstrual cycles can help to understand their energy and emotional levels during each stage, and consequently plan around it.

Freedom For Girls ended the session with a safe space for those in the group who experience menstrual cycles to get support. On top of that, they offered free period-protection underwear to those that wanted some.

Thanks to Freedom for Girls for giving our young people important knowledge that can either help them during their cycles, or help them to support others that experience them.

Long-time volunteer, Dylan, once-again joined our Inspire group to deliver another filmography session. In the first of a two-week workshop, he taught the young people about stop-motion animation.

The group built characters using pipe cleaners, using them to learn and model different movements. They were then tasked with making a short stop-motion movie using craft materials. From story-boarding their animation, to taking photos of each frame and chaining them together.

Thanks again to Dylan for teaching our young people new art and filmography skills. The young people had a lot of fun, and their short movies looked great.

For our first session back after this year’s ‘FOCUS Does Summer’ scheme, our Facing the Future group held a scrapbooking session.

Young people filled four scrapbooks with a multitude of photos from the summer scheme, adding messages about everything they enjoyed.

It was a great chance to reflect and reminisce on the fun they’d had and skills they’d gained. Shoutouts to all the young people who have joined the project after the summer scheme!

With this year’s ‘FOCUS Does Summer’ scheme wrapped up, we want to thank the excellent volunteers that supported us this year.
Their time, dedication and support helped us create an amazing start to the summer for many young people.
At the end of the summer scheme, each volunteer was awarded a certificate as proof of their hard work. Congratulations to them all!

We hope all of them will stick around to further support the young people on our projects.

Our ‘FOCUS Does Summer 2026’ residential also housed the biggest creative challenge of the Summer Scheme! Young people were challenged to our ever-popular Movie Making Day, planning, pitching and filming their very-own short movie.

Each took on a variety of roles - including acting, directing, scriptwriting, editing, make-up and marketing - giving everyone the chance to contribute their skills and ideas. The finished films were screened for the whole group before the teams celebrated their achievements at the Summer Scheme Oscars. Awards recognised a range of contributions, including Best Film, Actor, Director, Story or Script, Editing, Make-up, Marketing and Unsung Hero. The activity brought together everything the teams have developed during the programme: creativity, communication, resilience and collaboration
